The NHL rules dictate that any player earning greater than $1.075 million and on a one-way contract, will still have their salary count towards the cap even if they clear waivers.

Can anyone clarify the CAP ramifications of waiving and demoting a player making more than 1.075 per?
Rooney is making 1.3 mil so if he is waived and clears can we send him down and eat 225K in dead CAP or would his full 1.3 mil count against our CAP?

You can send Rooney down & that cap space you would gain is just that 1.075. the $220K is dead space.

I'm not suggesting that Markstrom has been great, but save% is a useless stat on an individual game basis, especially when looking at the Flames, at both ends. The Flames are really good at limited shots and then making massive blunders that lead to 2-on-1s or someone wide-open in the slot. Markstrom letting in a weak goal or two a game wasn't really happening earlier in the season. And then on the other end, the Flames have the mentality that if they can see the net, they shoot regardless if they have any chance of scoring or not, which inflates a lot of the save% of goalies going against them.

Good point. I can't believe how many low percentage shots the Flames take.
Even on the power play they are shooting consistently from the blue line in hopes of a deflection that seldom comes.
Defence is a big part of the game but I think a lot of the Flames are gripping their sticks more afraid of making a mistake than being creative.

Boy, did you overpay for Huberdeau! He is only getting older too. He's going to hurt your salary cap in the future.

Is it time to call up Mathew Phillips? Flames score 3 goals in 3 games. If they do, he would have to clear waivers to be sent back down. Send Rooney down to make room for him, if someone claims him, pfffft.

Agree. Not sure Pelletier or Duehr/Zary couldn't replace Lewis or Ritchie.Sutter is a great coach but his teams always get old, slower and expensive.

Ritchie with 4 goals already. I’d rather him play.

Yup, Ritchie is doing his job.

Time to switch something up.
