The combinations of Siegs, Marino, Smith and Graves playing that stay at home D will hopefully let Hamilton, Sev and Nemec play more and give more offense. The D core reminds me of the good old days when we had a puckmover for every crushing Dman. It worked then and I see no reason it can't these days.
Barring injuries to the core, Im saying we are in the playoffs this year.
And I don't think I've ever been this excited to see the results of a new coaching staff. They all bring their own niche to the club and if it works out, this team can explode.

I don't think sieg is really a crushing stay at home dman, he is just very very stable and defends very well and is rarely out of position
I think that Nemec will at least start in Utica but will be good to see preseason and how long it takes for him to adjust, and not to rush him
Hamilton graves
Severson sieg
Smith/bahl/okhu Marino
It should be better this season with coaching and more depth and hopefully better goaltending

Marino isn't physical at all, but he is a strong defensive dman that handles the puck well. I think you all will appreciate him a lot. Still don't believe PIT is any better with all the blueline moves and definitely got older and slower. |

I really liked making the move for Marino, especially since it looks more and more like Severson is on his way out with Hamilton on the top pair and Nemec coming soon.
Ty Smith was an absolute stud during his time in the WHL and looked pretty promising in his rookie NHL season. Something went very wrong with his development. He’s only 22, if the Pens get him back on track this could be a very good move for them long term. |

It was obvious that Pens needed to make a cap dump and this was the only trade that could happen because it doesn't make a lot of sense for the Pens to take on a 22 year old project when they are trying to milk the last years of the core star group. Is Ty really going to get the ice time/leash necessary to develop? |

Petry, Letang, Dumoulin, Pettersson and Rutta are in, but that’s only 5.
They got Ruhwedel but I don’t know that he’s guaranteed to start over Ty? Guess we will see.
I really don’t know what happened to Smith, but I’d expect that the Pens try to get him as much NHL time as possible, at least until he becomes a liability. |

If I remember correctly, Ruhwedel is one of those guys with good underlying defensive metrics that the stats people like. Pens made some weird decisions with their defense this year seeing that last year they were one of the best teams on the backend in terms of limiting chances. Seems like an overcorrection on their part where they only lost to the Rangers because their goaltending all got injured at the wrong time. |

Bratt was excellent, his assist was awesome. He's like a ballerina, he just avoids hits and is so agile. He's gonna have a monster year. It was first pre season game, and the chemistry he has with Nico is so fun.
MB played well. It was a great shot that probably would have beat any goalie.
Also, not sure if people recognized this about Severson. Maybe he was always like this, idk. The post game interview, he spoke like a true leader / coach of the team. He speaks SO well. If that is how he is with the team, then he would be a big loss if he gets traded. |

Hextall needed to make a cap move AFTER bringing in the expensive Rutta. Stupid move. I'm skeptical Petry will be better than Marino too. Bunch of lateral moves for more money and age. |
