From last thread.

For 8 years starting next year? With the cap going up a lot in a few years? The kid was looking at a much bigger contract than that in a few years if he signed something shorter
- Canada Cup

Look at the structure. It goes five mill then 6.5 for the next. Then 9, 9, 10, 10, 9.9

If he took lower for a couple years bridge (2x5.75) you think his next deal would have been more than 10 per?

You don’t want to lock in for 8 years and miss out at a much bigger number that will be coming in 3 or 4 years. I don’t know when he hits $10 per year. Maybe it’s 3 years. Maybe it’s 4. It depends on when the cap jumps. The key is to look for your long term deal when the cap goes up and when you’ve proven yourself and not now when the cap is low and you have really shown what you can do. It’s a really bad move.

He will not be underpaid at all.
Unless he turns into a consistent 100pt stud.
Nothing is guaranteed in life or sports....better to take the deal now.

He’ll be 28 when his deal ends and making what he should if he turns out. If he’s that good he will get another 8 year deal taking him to the end of his career for a hefty sum. He hasn’t proven anything yet. It could still look really bad in a few years.

He'll have to improve to at 90 - 100+ pts by the end of this deal in order for this deal to be good.

We could be getting close to a $90M cap in 3 or 4 years. $8M will be chump change then. The kid has the potential to be a star and will lose out on a bunch of years of star money.

It's a good gamble imo.

I mean, there's still the risk he doesn't live up to his potential after only one good season but.... odds are in their favor I'd say.

How much money will be left for the defense and goaltending though.

In 3-4 years he is making 10 mill per year not 8.

So? It averages out to $8. He makes $5 in the first year and $7 in the last.

So he gets over paid for a few years of the deal and possibly under paid for a couple. If he becomes a 90-100 point man it’s a fair deal. If he doesn’t it’s an over pay.

I’ve never understood that argument.

Like the year nylander made like 12 million his first year and everyone is freaking out. The only this that matters is the aav. Who cares if he makes 5 million one year and 15 million the next.

Highly unlikely, as far as I've seen of him.

It will probably turn out like everyone else’s contract that sign 8 years as young stud.

First couple years they’re overpaid and everyone is laughing at their contracts.

Then midway through your like alright they are starting to look like they’re worth it.

The end they’re outperforming their contract and will get a raise on the next one.

Two or three years before a big jump in the cap hurts the player in this scenario

I sincerly hope that Timothy "Apple Strudel" will be the next Alexander Daige in Ottawa and be paid 10M per year to do it.

That would be as sweet as....well a good Apple Strudel!
