Hains: Caufield Extension

Cole Caufield has now entered the last year of his entry level contract and is therefore eligible to sign a contract extension.

Clearing out some big contracts over the next 12-24 months is a priority.

Habs are at the point where they are brining in a lot of young players over the next few years, and perhaps even more important than drafting / development, will be their ability to get the best value on contracts for some of these kids.

I like the Suzuki contract and believe he will grow into it, but the Habs need to be careful of handing out those long term deals - for how much, how long and to whom - to kids that have not fully developed their potential yet (and may never get there)...

Will be interesting to see what they do with CC... I think he can be a regular 30 goal / 60 pts type guy in the NHL.

But one bad contract mistake can become extremely problematic fast...

not saying it's gonna happen I'd be curious to see how the habs deal with the situation if Caufield has an insanely good season and scores 40 goals...

I think he can score 40, but I think the realistic pace he will have in his career is closer to 30/30 on average... will have some better year and maybe some lesser ones.

30/30 is nothing to sneeze at.

holy... in terms of contract negotiations that would be a nice "problem" to have.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying but it's kinda hard for the habs to make this point while negotiating if he does indeed score 40.

So, if he scores 40, Pat, sign him to a bridge deal... He's still an RFA without arbitration rights, if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: For a small, dynamic scorer like CC, he's gotta show some consistency and ability to stay healthy, over an extended period (2-3 years).

Agreed, we can't repeat the Gallagher mistake, I don't mind overpaying for shorter contracts. In 2 years some of the bad contracts go away I think

I'm much more optimistic about this camp than the last one.

If anything because we have alot of interesting young players to see in action.

Oh yeah were in a phase where's it's going to be fun to look at the prospects, but they are going to suck on the ice.

And like, hardcore suck

Of course, we're most likely a lottery team again this year.

But unlike last year, I expect our young players to perform and show good things while losing.

It will be interesting, at some point the honeymoon with St-Louis will fade and the couch athletes will be tired of them losing in the dog days of february. I want to see how the team in place will weather the reconstruction pain storm

I like MSL.

But MSL has to develop as a coach as well, if we want this to work out.

That might be one of the most important development priorities in the organization.
