Bill Meltzer: Quick Hits: Morin, Kapanen and Shero, TIFH - bmeltzer
Kappenen has worn a lot of hats; so at least has some experience. Have any of them been successful?
Kyle will be an entry level scout it seems. Not an issue.
The former flyers angle is always good for a good chuckle.

The longer time goes on the more i realize hextall was on to something when he started alienating the old guard |

I agree it's a blemish on his(Hextall) record, but so does every GM among all professional sports.
Looking back, I don't have an issue in the sole regard of how he dealt with his advisors. |

Looking at the Flyer’s defense for next season, putting aside for a moment the Ellis injury question or wild trade ideas, I would guess they will still look to sign one free agent for group of 6. Last season they had Braun and Yandle in that group; even if you pencil in York, they still need one more. I would not mind if they bring back Connauton for the #7 role.
If they don’t get an extra d-man in trade, who do you see as options in the potential free agent market? Thoughts on Jan Rutta? If anyone’s option of choice is in the playoffs right now, it’s the perfect time to take a look. |

We should compile a running list of all the nepotism babies that end up in this organization...
Jay Snider,
Wade and Jodi Clarke,
Bill Dineen,
Peter White,
Brett Hextall,
Nick Pryor,
Lauren Hart,
Carson Briere,
Nick Luukko,
Kyle Shero,
Tucker Roberts (potentially).
I'm probably missing a bunch. |

Maybe it won’t be a big deal, I am sure no one envisioned the 7D playing as many minutes and games as this past season. However, I thought of the two, Connauton was a more well-rounded extra so he can pair with a variety of partners and also can help push offense more.

They made him captain in Reading and then hired him as assistant coach right after he retired.
Now he's a head coach in Jacksonville. |

The entirety of the NHL is nepotic.
Perhaps instead of complaining about it, seek some understanding WHY this is so pervasive.
The backchannels are where the intimate details are shared. You don't get headlines unless it goes to hell. Then it becomes straight-out gossip as opposed to needed insights.
Trust is paramount. These moanings of mere bias forcing these selections, being the key issue are wrong.
Damn! You guys are working the far margins when you complain that interns are being hired. Get a grip. |

Actually we're not. We're working at the head of the line. The Flyers refusal to predominantly go out of their inner circle and their connections is a huge reason for the failures of this franchise.

He rescued Kalpa from the brink of collapse and, on a tight budget even by Liga standards, built a contender for a number of years. Does that count? |

So if the Flyers had a chance to get Brind'amour as their head coach would that be a no for you since he could have ties to the Flyers inner circle? |

No, it wouldn't be. I don't think being connected to the Flyers should eliminate someone from consideration of employment.

I agree. The Flyers have also lost any leeway for making mistakes when employing former players. So, if they hire a former player for a role and he stinks they deserve to hear about it. That should also be true for anyone they hire who stinks.
