Great article today JL.

Two empty net goals means Blash was pushing hard to get back. Hopefully pressure with this group will produce diamonds?

Stay well

Blaming Blashill for pulling the goalie is stupid.

Maybe Blash should have done the Waaaaah (Roy) thing and pull the goalie with 10 minutes left!
Who knows what would happen with the element of surprise!

Not mocking anyone here, coaching hockey is not a perfect science.

It's not, for sure. But, then again, we don't have a scientist behind the bench, sooooooo

I was on the fence when I saw the G pull; tie game, etc... When the 1st EN hit, I turned the game off. Pulling the G is a hard call, I'd imagine. I would think there's a TON of feedback from the other coaches (tends, etc...). Regardless, I think there needs to be a coaching change, said it for along time. Just seems Blash has issues developing a strong team, or putting forth a philosophy that enhances development of both the team and the kids.

Hard to watch last night, you could see the wheels shake/wobble, then fall off. The game (and Jan/part of Feb) shows there are still gaps and development that need attention.

Hey Mike. I 100% agree with you. Tie game. 3-3. Puzzling move to pull the goalie there and let in two EN to go down 5-3. I was on the fence just like you. Solid analysis. Tell us more.

Sorry, mis-typed (typing too fast & not checking before I hit "Send"....I do that too often); I meant "time left in the game".....

The point I was trying to make was pulling the goalie towards the end of the game is not an exact science (the reference made to Roy in an earlier post, etc...).

Definitely need to review what I type before I send and make sure the tie-in makes sense and is better articulated!

Gotcha.

Statistically he pulled the goalie too late.

The maximum likelihood is 26% ± 4% at the 03:00 mark on the game clock. In other words, pulling the goalie with 3 mins left in the 3rd period has historically yielded a 1/4 chance of success.

I knew if there was a stat for this, you'd find it!! Thanks.

So Veleno scored late in the 3d with an Assist from GEMEL Smith! Ge. Smith had a decent Detroit debut; a "fight" and an Assist?!?!? Would've been cool for him to log a Gordie Howe Hat-Trick He seemed pretty energized during his limited TOI.

Frustrating game, overall. Ras scored, finally. The remainder of the season's going to be just as tough as Jan & this far in Feb have been, though

Gemel is a way better skater than Givani and he fought that POS so he had a good debut.

Yeah, wholly agree with the skating ability....I was impressed with his short amount of time last night. Hopefully, he develops and adapts to the system here. Seems like a good kid. I am NOT a fan of Claude, nor his off-spring

Now that Verbeek is the Ducks GM, does he let Linholm go to FA so Stevie can sign him? Asking for a friend.

It's Lindholm, not Linholm. Not extending doesn't necessarily mean the Wings do. 30 other teams have a say in that. What's more likely is that two GMs who know each other and trust each other make a trade from time to time. Even something as basic as moving up or down in the draft becomes easier with a GM with a high degree of trust. Basic stuff.

He will trade Zegras, Drysdale and McTavish to Detroit for Rasmussen, Zadina and Lindstrom. Then he will let Lindholm walk so he signs with the Wings. After that he will get fired and then come back to work for Yzerman. All part of Yzerman's rebuild plan.

How many times has pulling the goalie worked for the Wings this season? Wings have got to be leading the league in empty net goals allowed by a wide margin. How many goals have they scored with the goalie pulled...one or two? It's not working with this team.

I'm not saying he should never do it at all but down by 2 is a waste of time and he just allows the other teams to pad their stats and make the Wings goal differential worst.

Blashill has done it plenty of times this season, i wasn't talking about the game against the Kings...like the last game against the Leafs for example.

I would rather they just played out the game 5 on 5 but the result would likely be the same as taking a knee.

I mean in this game Veleno would have had the tying goal if they hadn't pulled the goalie. Of course that's looking in hindsight so I'm not going to blame them for trying. They really need to work on possession though because it gets turned over for an empty netter just about every time they try.

Pulling the goalie is statistically the right play.

According to my rough back-of-the-envelope math, pulling the goalie with 2-3 minutes to play roughly doubles your chances of tying the game and getting to OT versus playing it out at 5-on-5.

It also quadruples your chances of giving up a goal, but who cares if you lose in regulation by 1 or by 2? A loss is a loss.
