Does Colorado have cap space? Isn't Giroux a big ticket cap hit?

Nope, less than $100k. Which is why the many rumors of a billion dollar goalie showing up are absurd, at least to me anyway. So we can't trade futures for a big ticket player, which I am fine with because I'm in no rush to move out Barron or Bowers, and there's not much of substantial salary cap value I'd want to ship out either.
But if it came from Friedman then certainly Joe is at least trying to figure out how to make it all fit together. I feel like any deal has to involve (purely for cap reasons) JTC or Jost and they've played well enough that that may not be an option. No other salary worth moving is worth moving because the player is too valuable to the team as is.

If they can make it work and it costs us Jost I’d be ok. He’s taken a step backwards from last year. He was tenacious and a pest on the ice last season, not so much this year and his PK ability took a step backwards as well, playing 4th line minutes and zero offensive contribution is not gonna cut it. The Jost experiment in Denver is over. Make it happen go all in this year and try to win the cup. So many UFA RFA this off season doubt we see a team like this next year

I agree about going all in. Bit fwiw, “doubt we see a team this good next year” has been the narrative two off seasons in a row now. Of course it will eventually come true, but as this season is showing, the decline of the Avs has been overblown. They’re even better than last year, and even though Kadri may not be replicated, watch the Avs continue improving and blowing everyone’s minds (it’s fun).

But we do have an in house replacement for Kadri: Newhook. Maybe not be ppg replacement yet, but he will be. As much as I like O'Connor, imagine Burakovsky or Nuke flanking him instead.
There's a good article on Mile High Hockey where the writer explains really well how someone like Giroux could be brought in, and even he mentions it would only cost something like Jost and next years first + prospect. I'm fine with that if we can win a cup. The only futures I am hard no on trading are probably Barron and Helleson.

I don’t think the Avs need to go and get anyone. The goaltending has stabilized with Francouz coming back. He allows Kuemper to relax a bit knowing there is a competent netminder behind him. JJ was not an NHL goalie and I think the pressure on Kuemper to be great was hurting him early in the season. I would guess we see a 60/40 split going forward.

If we are to bring a forward in, and if it is Giroux, we should send Burakovsky out. At 4.9 mil he is too inconsistent. Most nights he is not noticeable. Just is a bust but at 2 mil he is fine for the 4th line.

I agree we have Kadri’s replacement in Newhook. It would be nice to bring back Kaddish but I fear we can’t afford to do so. I think next year a line of Nichushkin/Newhook/O’Conner would work.
