Theo Fox: Training Camp: Day 3
A summary of Day 3 of Blackhawks training camp including thoughts on the transition game, puck touches, and stick checking plus a lesson of the day.
Thank you, Theo.
You cannot be more correct, the Blackhawks need to VASTLY improve their transition out of the defense zone before they can imagine making the playoffs.
Is anyone coming up with reasons why the D to F passing and exiting the zone is so atrocious? Bad passing? F not in position?

The first two things I’d look for is:
Are the forwards supporting the defense? If the forwards aren’t coming back supporting the defensemen, like was common last season, the defense are left to battle for the puck and try to get it out of their end. Of course anyone, even Murphy haters can see that it’s unfair to expect the defensemen to do anything more than just get the puck out of their zone.
And are the forwards in proper position for the defensemen to pass to? Forwards supporting the defensemen need to also find open ice for outlet passes, not cherry picking outside the blueline. If a defender is in a battle for a puck you can’t expect him to send a tape to tape pass to a forward standing fifty or more feet away.
History has shown the forwards are generally the problem for poor outlet passing.
This is on Colliton to ensure the players know and then do their jobs.

Boqvist was really really good at it. I think at a certain point you need a dman who can make a pass, that's why i believe when it's all said and done Kalynuk will be part of the top 4 dmen on this team because he's very good at it.

Before we had AHL and college defenseman playing against NHL. It was a fire drill getting out. We still have mostly the same Forwards. Two new defensemen only make one pair the rest of the defense is suspect. I'm not counting C. Jones we're not talking Paul Coffey here.
When you don't see MINIMAL improvement over time, it's time to ask some hard questions. Hawks are seemingly hemmed in their own end for extended stretches. How many rookie D-men does a coach get to burn through? Think it's time to shift the focus elsewhere. Anywhere.
Ryan Pace must have failed GM 101. Build the offensive line first. Eight sacks against da Bears and poor Justin Fields today.

Is the o-line stopping Bears from getting open - even for quick short passes, no blue shirts have any time and space. Fields has no time, and the play calling doesn’t play to his strengths, but receivers are completely smothered.
Mayfield has time, but his receivers are basically wide open on every play.

47 total yards by a professional football team 46 rushing and 1 passing (sack losses deducted off actual yards gained passing). Combination of poor game planning, coaching and lack of talent.

In addition to scheming receivers open, having time can also allow the receivers that opportunity.
Fields was running for his life all day long. Pace's plan of addressing the OT position almost exclusively through the draft while cutting the vet starters from last year is coming home to roost.
Massie and Leno weren't the answer either but not really having a backup plan is pretty much no plan.

Saw the highlights or lowlights earlier, what a joke. If you can’t protect Fields, then roll him out or he won’t last the year.
By the way Gus with two assists tonight for NYI.

Fields will end up like Mitch because of the bolded. Maybe the Bears and Blackhawks should just trade coaches.

They have more experience on the back end, and the young forwards now have another year under their belt, no excuse for that. - Angotti
Are we to suppose or assume the college of hard knocks will be how the forward group begins to work as part of a cohesive unit in the break out?
Timely sage advice and or leadership from Toews going to factor in to changing temptation to rush ahead, out of position on break out? Which means we suffer before it gets fixed. If Colliton is such a bright guy, then he ought to figure out how to get through, that is, into the minds of the forwards [url]g

Easy to smother when d-backs know there won't be time to run deep and you have the lead.
The poor clears have been a reoccurring issue for the Hawks for a long while, well before JC arrived. They get better when they have some D who can carry the mail and skate the puck if the option for a pass isn't there. If you always look pass to get out of the zone, the lanes will close up. If you have a few guys who can skate really well with the puck, they create more opening for passes by drawing opposing players towards them.

And you don’t think teams will clue in and stop a defenseman carrying the puck? Carrying the puck out is a nice option on occasion but the only way to consistently clear the zone is to have the forwards supporting the defensemen and get themselves open for short passes out of the zone. If the opposition decides to send three forecheckers in deep to close the passing lanes that’s when you go for the Hail Mary pass to trap the forecheckers.
