I agree with Ben. You don't trade a top three Calder finalist that was signable at a reasonable rate and term for nothing. They spent years grooming him in the minors. He wins a championship in the AHL. He puts up a 932 save percentage in his first season. He is protected in the expansion draft and you get nothing in return. At least they could have exposed him to Seattle and we would still have Geekie. Horrible trade.

I like the trade because the Canes are in a win now mode and I think they are going after a bigger fish maybe Grubauer or Anderson in an effort to show Dougie that they are serious on the next steps.

If this isn't tied to try and keep Hamilton, than it is for nothing.

There is no way, none to defend this trade. Why did the owner buy this team if he doesn’t want to pay players fair value?
3.5 million? That’s too much money? Get real. Wouldn’t be surprised if they asked Hamilton to take a pay cut if he wanted to stay in Carolina.

what?

so, we dont want to pay a young up and coming goalie his money so we are going to go pay more for a vet who will have higher salary demands..

Waddell going back to old habits, reason why he was available for quite a few years

Carolina and Anaheim should make another trade.

Gibson for Martin Necas straight up

Carolina gets their solid goaltender, Anaheim gets a good young player with potential and cap space

This screams cheap ownership to me more then Waddell making a boneheaded move.

Is this as bad as the sniff test suggests? Are they tight to the cap? Is he bad in the room? Did he want out? Even if any answers are yes, how could they not get more for him?

Am i missing something here or did the canes just completely screw this scenario?

Who plays in net for Anaheim? Stolarz? Maybe something could have been done if Carolina didn’t give away their goalie.

He wanted 3.5 a season Carolina only wanted to pay him 1.5 a season. So they moved him over 2 million bucks a season on a short term contract. Yes it’s as bad as it looks and smells.

"Disgraceful" because it was Nedeljkovic, not Mrazek.

And if Waddell has to trade Nedeljkovic (for whatever reason he has, that we just don't see) then he must get a #1 Draft Pick in return.

Other than helping Yzerman and his Detroit Red Wings, Waddell didn't accomplish much for his Carolina Hurricanes.

Now if Bernier wins the Cup with Carolina next year, then I eat crow and will be the first to admit that Waddell was right, and I was wrong.

BTW: Great article Ben.

I understand that, but if ownership told him to make that move, well he has no choice. But if it comes out that he made that move on his own, then yes he deserves all the rotten tomatoes thrown at him and is worse then the previous gm mr treading water himself Ron Francis.

I have all the respect in the world for Ron Francis for what he has done as a player, but the gm Ron Francis? Yeah that guy stinks.

Anaheim isn’t going to be competing anytime soon. Sign a UFA like Halak to get us by while we continue the rebuild

I feel for you guys, but what a great deal for the Wings!

How are the talks going with Svechnikov? If you are $1.5M apart in AAV, feel free to give Stevie a call!

I was impressed with Stolarz during his small sample size with Anaheim. I’d be fine with signing a UFA like Halak and running a Halak/Stolarz duo while Anaheim keeps rebuilding. We’re far from competing and Gibson is wasting his prime with Anaheim.

Wow. I dont like this trade. And it seems nobody likes this trade. I wonder if he wanted a 2 year deal to be a UFA at 26 or 27 and the Canes wanted long term. Either way this is puzzling.

Even if he was traded because he pissed somebody off in the locker room and that person goes to management and says him or me. You don't trade him for a bag of doughnuts. At least expose him in the expansion draft and you would still have Geekie. I am not saying that is what happened but is just an illustration of how poor of asset management this is.
