OH boy Kassian?
You do realize he's scored 5 goals since Mathew Tkachuk messed with his mind.

Sinking half of this newly opened cap space into Zack Kassian would certainly be deflating.

@Vic: Not saying I want to do this trade at all, but would you feel better about it if it is Petterson for Kassian?

C'mon give away tanev to pick up kassian. Tanev is the better player by far. This is why this move to allow him to go was so dumb. He's not a 4th line player. He is a very good 3rd line player who was playing on the 4th like because they were so deep at forward. He is irreplaceable for the energy he brings

I agree that Gaudreau seems like a no brainer signing... I hope we can get him signed for something in the $1M range, but he played really good for us and I could easily see someone willing to sign him for closer to $2M. I would also be fine with that but we shouldn't act like its a no brainer he will sign with us for under $1M.

I have forever been on the bandwagon wanting to get Kassian. His contract isn't great but there aren't many players like him in the league who can hit, fight and can skate. Last year was a really bad one for him but he was dealing with a bunch of injuries. I think he would be awesome with Jake & Sid.

Sounds like Edmonton is hot on Hyman, meaning they might want to move Kassian's salary sooner than later. I don't think it should cost us much of anything to get Kass if we aren't sending salary back, probably a 6th round pick or Friedman and a 7th. I'd be good with it.

I totally forgot about Kassian. Makes sense. I’m sure the impending Hyman deal makes his departure more likely to free up cash.

Edmonton would have no interest in Petterson. They have Nurse, Keith & Klefbolm (if healthy) on the left side. They will be focused on replacing Larsson and bolstering the offence, not LD.

If Edmonton were to miss out on Hyman, I could definitely see them being interested in a Zucker for Kassian trade.

It would be a Rutherford move....and we don't have Rutherford anymore....I have to believe this wont happen but its hard not to think it....

Not really. In the words of Marshal, Petterson does a job and he does it well, it's just not sexy and IMO not super hard to replace for under market value. Since Petts is right around market value, I think Petterson is a good place to cut cap and reinvest in a cheaper replacement and a position of need (top 9 goal scoring forward or goalie). Bringing in Kassian cancels out almost all of the reinvestable cap space, so I'd rather just keep Petterson.

I'm not saying that Kassian as a non-play driving bottom 6 forward who's an above average goal scorer for a bottom guy with snarl isn't useful, but at 3.2 mil he's a luxury for a team and we can't afford to allocate our cap to that when we have much bigger holes in the roster. Add in that he's 30 and has had a rough couple of seasons with health, and I'm completely out.

Kassian fits the narrative of getting bigger and tougher though. Losing Tanev goes backwards from that, so I won't be shocked if this happens.

I agree with all that. Just posing the question since the moving Petterson wouldn’t do anything to our new found cap space. But yeah, I wouldn’t do it either.

Getting Kassian would be a kick in the long pants for sure. Don’t like this offseason so far, but I’ll wait n see. Doesn’t seem like much, if any info has leaked out since new management took over. Just a lot of speculation.

My take. The Penguins wanted out of Tanev's contract but had to expose 1 other forward. They were leaning on exposing McCann because they felt they couldn't afford his new contract so they traded him for some magic beans. Now they have enough cap space to do something pretty good or outright silly.

Everyone's (theoretically) spending the money on forwards, but we still haven't see what Hextall wants in goal. That could be where this money (or a good portion of it) goes.

If Foegle is available I'd love for the Pens to check in on him.

Seravalli tweeted about Kuzy and the Rags, but didn't mention anything here. Hm.

I read another article from some russian outlet that mentioned the link, but it doesn't sound like a strong desire from NYR, but that they're the team with the most interest relatively speaking. Kuz's antics must have really left a major stink around the league.

Instead of Kassian, I would rather see the Pens make a move for Pitlick who has been rumored with Calgary and Philly.

Agree on Armia, he is solid.

Sounds like Virtanen is going to get bought out... I know he has his assault case going through the motions, but really it sounds like a pile of BS. I would take a chance on the kid on a short term deal. I think he has some serious upside in the right situation. Give him one year to get his career back on track and I could see him as a long term replacement for Rust when he prices himself out of Pittsburgh.
