Oilers and Zach Hyman Have a Deal. Will Toronto Match? Edmonton and Toronto are mastering in "miscalculations" today. The Oilers losing Larsson yesterday was a major blow on all levels to an organization that wants to continue to step forward. Edmonton will need to no find at least 2 top 4 D-men to do that now. Zach Hyman is still a great fit for the Oilers for sure, and Toronto allowed Hyman to test the market and talk to Edmonton. Hyman wants to play with his buds on the Leafs and the belief is he will give Toronto one last chance...however once a player feels appreciated, like Edmonton has made Hyman feel, things get dicey.

Looks like the Oilers need one top 4 RHD to me. Could be Tyson Barrie coming back.

That's a long time for Hyman. I guess if he can mentor Holloway it'll work out. Love the player but not at that term.

Do oiler fans feel they can win consistently with this D and goaltending?

Maybe they have a side deal with Seattle to take Koskinen where Seattle buys him out?

It would be so typically Oilers to throw max term at Hyman. Will this organization EVER learn?

Barrie would be as bad as we could possibly do. We would be better off shifting Russel to the right side, and even that does not sound like a playoff D. We need someone like Savard or an all around guy like Hamilton.

Not a chance. If our Larsson replacement is Barrie we will not make the playoffs. We already needed to be more physical, and Larsson was our only shutdown guy.

This is pure greed. 30 or 40 mil: even after escrow and taxes, you and your children are set for life. But voluntarily spending next 8 years of your life in Edmonton so that you could afford to buy an yacht that you will not be able to use???

Because he inherited a Stanley Cup champion with future Hall of fame players. Backed by one of the best NHL owners of all time in Mike Ilitch Sr. Coached by the best head coach of all time Scotty Bowman.

If you really understand the Oilers organization, this makes some sense. But for most casual observers, they believe this is a disaster.

But here is the thing...the Oilers clearly have more optimism that guys like Bouchard and Broberg develop into top pair guys, to go along with Nurse. Bear is still improving. Samorukov could surprise. So investing heavily on defense might be nice now, but won't be necessary in 2-3 years.

Up front its pretty thin. Holloway is the only real prospect. McLeod doesn't have a high ceiling. So that's where you bring in Hyman, maybe Tatar on a cheap deal.

The window to win isn't next year, or likely the year after. You are looking realistically at year 3,4,5 when those kids on defense mature. And obviously a true 1G. Smith is just a stop-gap during that maturation process.

Hyman to Edmonton could be a real good fit. Depending on the length of the contract though will be the kicker.

It's not that hard to follow. They probably feel good enough to make the playoffs now. But not to truly compete until guys like Bouchard and Broberg are stars. That's 2-3 years away. So investing heavily in their defense isn't a priority. Forward depth is. That's where they will spend the money. If Hyman gets 7 or 8 years, they don't care about years 6-7-8. The window is years 3-4-5. Giving term keeps the cap hit down. Same with RNH. It will end badly, but the focus is on that shorter window. #rocketscience

Since when do 40 point players get 8 year contracts? Brutal. Edmonton is showing this off season that they clearly have no idea what they are doing

yeah his management style is stuck in circa 2002 when he had an open checkbook from Illitch and unlimited cap space.....

Comments like this are annoying! Pro athletes deserve every single penny they get. They have been working for this since they were 4yrs old and have gone through more to get there than ANY profession, the rest is just jealousy.

Also, everything is relative, and perhaps due to an athletes financial situation, which they've earned, their expenses and lifestyle mean that they do consider the financial implications of each deal. Of course it's greed, who isn't greedy? especially when it's for our kids. Again, it's all jealousy.

I do agree however that Hyman's kids would be set for life if they lived in your 500k home with a 350k mtg and 2.3 children...it's not the same, these guys have money, they spend money, and they need to cash in and realize the worth that the market has placed on them before the very small earning window closes.

As Ted Lindsay said, "we'd play for free if you weren't making money on our backs". Hyman's (or anyone else's) contract isn't his fault...it's ours.
