Serious question... what do you think the problem is with Tatar being benched/ healthy scratched? From his 3 most recent coaches now? (Happened in Vegas to) I dont buy into the "well the NHL hates him and coaches are stupid so they single him out because its a conspiracy against him." Has there ever been anything brought up off ice or attitude or practice? Teammates dont like him? He clearly puts up good numbers even being one of the smaller players in the league at like 5'9' 175lbs
- pens4life-66

It comes from the idea that if he’s not scoring he’s hurting the team which is absolutely false.

Dude absolutely has zero attitude, work ethic, or teammate issues.

Just as an example here and not to say he’s on that level but we just saw how Stone completely neutralized Mackinnon.

Let’s look at Matthews in round 1

5v5 xGF% against Tatar: 47.47

5v5 xGF% away from Tatar: 69.95

Simply put, he doesn’t have to be scoring to be effective but he’s smaller and doesn’t have the narrative of being a good defensive player so he gets scratched.

He also had 17 5v5 hits in the 5 games he played against Toronto.

On a per 60 rate that’s tops on Montreal and only beat out by Tanev for the pens.

Given the Penguins right defense depth I am not looking to actively shop Marino, but his contract is no guarantee to be good value at the present time. Jim Rutherford rushed in with a six-year 4.4M AAV contract which will start in 2021-22.
- Ryan_Wilson

The term of the contract is great as it takes Marino to 30 years old. The 4.4M cap hit is great unless you believe Marino’s season was a total mirage, I don’t. My only concern with this Marino deal doesn’t have anything to do with Marino at all. I hope the team doesn’t think that he can step up and become a #1 defender at the moment. Kris Letang is the rightful holder of that title and is still playing amazing hockey. Right now the Penguins have a wonderful one-two punch on the right side of their defense and it will only cost about 12M. They should keep it that way for the foreseeable future. Just sit back and enjoy. Many teams would love to have a pair of right handed defenders like Letang and Marino.

Jim Rutherford has given and acquired a lot of sketchy contracts the past couple of years. The John Marino contract isn’t one of them.

Goalie problem was solved by Eck. We're getting Anderson, and it's an e4!

I don't remember if it was this season or last season, but someone even figured out his source for another rumor came from the HF boards lol

"Kingerski acknowledged Andersen's struggles this season but also took note of his solid playoff record."

Andersen is 27-23 in the playoffs, is that really a solid playoff record?

Not saying he's bad, but I feel like that record doesn't scream "solid."

I'll admit, I noted it at the time because the general consensus when Maatta signed his extension was similar. Sort of, "Well, AT WORST, he'll be a top-4 defenseman getting paid market value," and we all saw how that went south quick.

Petterson - Marino was better than Matheson - Marino though.

And Matheson - Ceci was better than Matheson - Marino.

Is there still a “courting” window to talk to players before free agency, or did they do away w/ that?

Trade Dumo for a forward? You got to be kidding. The Pens already have lots of forward depth. Unless you are talking about a highly skilled and highly physical forward, which I am pretty sure no one would trade for anything, unless they are late in their career like Carter. The only way I trade Dumo is for a solid starting goalie or a high first round pick (basically an offer Hextall couldn't refuse).

As for the goaltending situation, assuming they don't trade for or sign a starting goalie, I think Sullivan should plan to go with a 50/50 split between Jarry and DeSmith unless one proves to be significantly better than the other. Neither is a long term solution but I think DeSmith should be allowed to prove himself as a starter for next season at least. He is only a few years older than Jarry. As the starter Jarry played almost twice as many games but DeSmith had better stats in just about every category. Of course, DeSmith may not do well coming back from injury and Jarry may have a bounce-back year.

As a starter and among goalies who played at least 10 games Jarry was 30th in the league in save % and 35th in GAA in the regular season. Part of that is the team's fault for playing careless defense at times but a lot of that is his fault. The team often had to put up 4+ goals a night to overcome the soft ones he let in. With the skilled forward on that team that is often possible in the regular season but often not in the playoffs.

Look, Jarry cannot be back next year. If you can't move him he needs to be the clear backup to a top notch goalie. He is still a solid goalie but this team will just mind(frank) themselves in the playoffs next year if he is in net.

He seems like a perfect fit for a team going on a rebuild or a team looking for some extra certainty. Buffalo makes sense, maybe Zona. Long shot but Seattle perhaps? Send him to the Oilers for Kassian? Trade for Gibson and have him go the other way?

I just know that keeping him will not turn out well.

Jarry and Pettersson for Fleury
Zucker for Ekholm
Encourage Seattle to take Matheson.

Add whatever pieces are needed to get the deals done.
