Carter looking so good you might have to protect him is an interesting problem to have.

But we can just float a 3rd round pick or whatever to entice Seattle to pick from whoever or to take Zucker. Like many teams will do to have specific players taken.

Rust is definitely not untouchable. If you get a really good offer for him you take it. If not you use him as an internal rental.

Jake falls into the grey area. He is awesome so obviously you don't need to move him but the Pens really need to shore up goaltending and their defence. He is the best asset to do it with.

Carter I do think is pretty close to untouchable as a 2C caliber player with a $2.5M cap hit. You would have to offer a massive haul to make trading him worth it. In a sense still not untouchable but realistically I would want multiple 1st round picks to trade him.

If they expose Zucker he is getting taken. 100%. I would float a mid round pick out there to have them select Pettersson or Matheson but not Zucker because they would just take him.

This list should read:

Sidney Crosby

He is the franchise, and even a McDavid for Crosby swap wouldn't happen because he's more to the team than just on-ice point production.

And that's it. I'd put the rest on the "It would have to be idiotic by the other GM" category, much like he alluded to concerning Rust. But they are not "unotuchable."

Also, the general consensus was that the Penguins window was 2-3 years 2-3 years ago. Fast forward, and their window is now 2-3 years. I know they just won the division, and I know Jarry blew up in the playoffs, but this team is now 3-13 in their last 16 playoff games. Barring some massive upgrade in goaltending and defense, plus with Malkin being out for a big chunk of next season, it may be the beginning of the end. Which sucks, because I want more exciting Penguins-Flyers marathons.

If I was told by the Seattle GM that they were going to take Carter if he's exposed, I think we don't have a choice but to protect him. Carter needs to be back next season. That said, I'm unsure why an expansion team would take a 36 year old expiring contract. I understand the need for veteran presences on a new team, and the Stanley Cup resume is something the decision makers will put a lot f weight on, but I just don't think gassing a pick on 36 year old with one year of term would be wise. It would be a win now move for Seattle in their first year of existence. I get that Vegas went to the Cup final their very first year, but I think would be foolish for Francis to operate off the assumption that he can recreate Karlson, Marchessault, and MAF falling into his lap and have an instant Cup contender.

Jake isn’t untouchable either IMO. Now a trade for him would have to be for another teams untouchable. Ie 1 for 1 for Gibson/kreider/etc. Jake+ for a Brady tkachuk.

Sid, geno, Letang are only untouchables in my mind because none will give you what they are worth to us at their age and declining play.

Really it depends on what other forwards are available to Seattle but yeah McCann or Blueger make a lot more sense for them.

Any similarities between players RF traded for/drafted in his previous spot? Might give an inclination of his type of player. But I guess it’s safe to assume he would take the best player on the best contract which should be zucker.

I mean, when you're in the territory of we would literally have to get Barkov back in the trade, you may as well just call the player untouchable. The production for cap situations are such that Malkin and Letang can only go in a trade if we're getting a younger and better player back, and no team is going to do something that irrational.

And I also agree with Wilson on his Guentzel bit. Its absurd he keeps getting included in trades here. I won't get into it again, but he's been a top 10 offensive winger in the league since getting into the league making like $6 mil. How do you upgrade from that?

Seattle is going heavy with analytics so they may look at ZAR.

YO Buffalo Boy you have to give something up to get something. I would give up Guentzel or Rust. Zucker is also gone. See you little guy.

ZAR is such a weird player for them to take IMO. ZAR is the guy you want when you have the rest of the team in place. He's the specialist you get to put a strong team over the top. I would think in an expansion draft you're trying to find undervalued goal scorers to increase your asset value so even if you decide you don't actually want the player you can flip him.

They would take him to flip him for picks as a rental. Carter caught fire with the Pens. Not sure if he still has a NMC but they could definitely get a 1st rounder plus from a contender for him. Either way, no chance they don't protect him.

No polite way to say this so I’m going to be direct. Anybody looking to move Jake Guentzel doesn’t understand the sport.

Well Ryan Wilson couldnt accuse us of being xenophobic if we wanted to trade Jake... so he had to go with this.

You could make an easy argument about why trading Jake is a reasonable move. As Ive said, I'd only trade him if it was a pure hockey trade.

Also trading Rust is good asset management. Something Wilson used to talk about as being important.

They take one player from each team... except for Vegas who somehow is exempt from this.

I'm not sure we can do that due to cap implications of bringing in a $10 mil player, which gets back to my point about Jake making like $6 mil for what he brings. I think it'll be pretty easy to get off Zucker's contract so his inclusion isn't really a carrot for me. Maybe I'm wrong and Zucker will be a pain in our cap structure's ass, but I really don't think he's a bad contract or bad player, he just didn't work out here.
