I'm going to guess you've never been to Japan? There are vending machines littered everywhere in the country and they aren't there to expressly serve tourists "over-priced" beer. The Ginza scenario happened on an oddball intersection that my buddy and I stumbled upon and we had no idea where we had wandered -- hence, the interaction with the police officer who kindly directed us back to whence we came (and seemed somewhat impressed with our broken Nihongo!).

For the record, we did not partake in any of the used underwear vending machines (probably because we couldn't find any... not that we were looking).

As per France, I was shocked at the incredibly cheap wine (do they have vending machines there selling alcohol?) -- doubly so when we ate at a restaurant on the Champs-Élysées. Our attempts at broken Français was mocked severely by the server but we like to think it was all in good humour (doubtful, but it was fun nonetheless).

I can't speak for Italia but I plan on going there soon as I'm married to an Italian and I've been told I must go (or else?). Suffice it to say, I will report back to you on the state of the likely rampant hooliganism that must have the country in a constant state of drunken anarchy.

How other countries have managed to survive with such a laissez faire attitude towards alcohol is just shocking. Shocking I tell you!

Also, just to clarify: small l libertarian not big L (and not in all respects, thank you). There's a difference.

I have no problem with finding ways to allow people to enjoy consuming alcohol in public places. I have a problem with completely uncontrolled consumption of alcohol in public places.

A large percentage of violent crimes are alcohol related. Enjoying a beer or some wine is great in a park is great. Putting a bunch of drunken 20 year olds in a park is not a good idea.

What I find funny is that it's 100% legal to smoke dope in a park, as long as you are not near the playground.

But drink a Bud Lite?

Nope, not allowed.

- Atomic Wedgie

You can’t even drink a bud lite radler that is 2.6% alcohol. You couldnt even get my 96 year old grandma drunk off that stuff.

It never failed to get me another date, and it was almost guaranteed sexy time.

The last time I went there was a wedding 16 mos. later

True story.
Sometimes I would order a Stella at the pub, and I would happily drink it. Sometimes at a family event, I would choose a Stella, or a Corona even, and enjoy every drop.

I haven’t had either of those for quite some time (years)...until last night (because of an unfortunate event).
Forced to choose between recently procured Stella or Corona, I chose the Stella, cracked it open, took a sip and...WTF!!!!!!!!
I couldn’t believe how poopty tasting it was...egads! How? Why? When? Was it me? Has it always been so poopty tasting?
My lord it was bad.

So is it zero sum then? People cannot enjoy a beer or two or some glasses of wine in the park because roving gangs of 20 year olds will necessarily commit alcohol fueled crimes given the opportunity?

Other countries are not crushed under the weight of alcohol based crimes. But we would be?

Nah.

Went through a couple summers of a real Hoegaarden phase in my 30's. I still like a good wheat beer, but Hoegaarden tastes too much like cloves for me now.

I’m afraid I think I would choose a glass of tap water over either beer now. I’ll save them for company...if company ever happens again. Thank goodness my wifeyPooh found a case of my fav bev near work. What a girl I married...even though I didn’t take her to Shakespeare in the Park.

Used to love that beer, in those giant chilled glasses they served it in.

Seriously, do you not bother to read other posts? I’ve said repeatedly I have no problem with people enjoying alcohol in public place. I simply want some control over excessive consumption. There are ways to do this. Please try to engage in honest discussion.

I have just been informed by my youngest daughter that she is sleeping in my bed tonight, and I am SOL.

Worst part?

The dog decided to stay in our room instead of joining me on the couch.

Franking traitor.

I can’t stay awake on our couch. It’s like the most glorious cloud of comfort, begging for you to lay down...”just lay your head down for a minute”, it beckons me.
Fifteen minutes I tell it...just fifteen minutes. Three hours later....
