Theo Fox: Game 22: Hawks 3, Wings 5
A recap of the Blackhawks first loss of the season to the Red Wings as Subban gave up 5 but got little help defensively.

Plus, a recap of the IceHogs being doubled up by the Monsters as Delia gave up 6 in his return to the AHL.

Bad lose...but its gonna happen.

They dominated the first 10 minutes and couldn't bury one. Then Wings score on their first chance.

Seen that so often. If you dominate like that and dont finish, well...it often comes back on ya.

Young team....It is nothing to worry about...IF they can come back today with a solid win. THAT is the telling factor...how do they respond. Tonights game will give us a clue of what they are made of.

What the hell happened last night at the UC? I was watching the greatest Maple Leaf team of all time shut down McDavid like he was just a piker and then a really good game between the Habs and Winnipeg. And then I see the Hawks on the wrong side of the score vs an AHL level team.

Didn't Bowman fire the entire coaching staff right after the game? Any mass player demotions to Rockford this morning? What about trades to dump some poor performers like Subban and the Russian plodder? Please advise.

Subban looked deep in his net and making himself small on most of the goals.

On detroit goal #3, why did Mitchell go behind the net? Keith was already there. Suter covered the front for him then went behind leaving the front open.

Everyone on the Hawks was wanting to assist Kane on #400 giving up some better scoring chances. Just play the game, Kane will get it eventually.

Yep...time to tank. Scoot over a bit, so I can climb out on the ledge there too.

There's still some room, but it is getting crowded.

Save my seat for me; I need to run out and buy a bunch of Mr. Potato Heads while I still can.

Yep - this was a reverse karma game. It reminded me of one of the games the Hawks won in Detroit recently. The Wings dominated early, but didn't score, and Chicago scored on their first shot. Detroit dominated the Corsi stuff, but Chicago won. Same thing yesterday, in reverse.

Not to pile on, but de Haan needs to stop thinking he is Brent Burns and taking it coast to coast. He's not good at finding options once he is in the zone.

Subban did NOT have a decent game. He was way too deep in his net and he covered the corners poorly. Reaction time also sub-NHL. Yes, he had little help on a couple of Dets goals, but he didn't help himself at all last night. Keith was indeed terrific last night. Whoever called the Wings an AHL team is spot on and we need to have more than a couple 6-7 minute spurts of energy to beat even an AHL team. Call it a trap game after a road trip and rebound tonite in a big way!

de Haan needs to use his partner more who can skate and make a better pass out of the defensive zone. Boqvist needs work no doubt, but de Haan is not helping him much either when he puts passes at the kids feet, and also tries to do too much offensively. Let Boqvist carry the mail, and let de Haan do what he is good at, and that is being a solid defensive defenseman.

Per Ben Pope:

The Blackhawks had a 49-19 scoring chance advantage over the Wings tonight.

That's their most dominant scoring chance ratio since Dec. 8, 2017 — a 3-2 win over Buffalo.

But tonight...they lost.

Interesting that in that Buffalo game - of the three goals - none were 5x5 - a PP goal, one SH, one 3x3 in OT.

One of the worst things that could have happened, for a certain fan segment, was the Hawks having success this season. The success has set the expectations too high for the casual fan who doesn’t see beyond wins and losses. The current line up lacks any depth, it lacks much top end talent and is almost void of experience. How the hawks were able to be successful so far this season was by maximizing the talent they have by out working their opponents. If the Hawks as a team don’t outwork the opposition they are not good enough to beat most, if any, teams. Last night the Hawks did something many inexperienced teams do, they looked at a team they saw as worse than themselves, took their foot off the gas and looked exactly like the team they are, a young, inexperienced team with very little top end talent.

This game reminded me a lot of the one 2 games ago, Subban was fine the defense let him down. Actually to put it in my own words team defense sucked. Suter had a bad game, and what's up lately with constantly passing the puck into opponents skates.

Exactly, and couldn’t sustain any more injuries than they already have. Missing Strome and Shaw has sure made PP1 become non-existent. Made a team significantly void of top 9 talent up front even more so. Looks like there is nobody this year at the Rock that is ready to step up.

Plus the Hawks aren’t going to sneak up on anyone anymore. What I am looking for is a bounceback tonight, then hold onto your butts for March.

This blog is very confusing to me a lot of times. The ones that scream the loudest that basically the whole team sucks, starting from the GM on down, are the one’s that complain the most when the team doesn’t win every game.

Per reports, Lankinen starting this evening. No surprise regardless of Subban's performance last night.

Trade rumor that is circulating: Canucks and Ducks talking a Virtanen for Heinen deal.

Binnington got pulled from a start last night in the St Louis-San Jose and punched 3 Sharks players on his way to the locker room. Sharks goalie confronted him, too.

Quite interesting that Ducks recalled Zegras but not Drysdale from AHL.

I wouldn't go near Virtanen. Eklund headline says what would it take to get Eckholm. I didn't bother to read Eklund

Thanks Theo, to be honest, even if Subban had played a good game last night he wouldn’t have gotten the net tonight, I think Lanks was already scheduled to go tonight. That’s my opinion, not a known fact.

I have a feeling that ledge is going to be super crowded in March, good thing I have a fear for heights. You better hurry up and get those Potato Heads before they’re all gone, I mean Mr. Potato Heads.

I would agree about why Lankinen gets the start tonight. It was likely a foregone conclusion before the series began to split starts with Subban for back-to-back nights.

Delia was horrendous for the Hogs last night. Poor puck management wanting to play it every chance he got. Gave up lots of rebounds.

Could be tough to say Delia is the clear 3rd string over Tomkins. While underwhelming so far this season, Tomkins is at least more technically sound and calm in net.

I wouldn't be surprised if Delia requested a trade.
