I've been a fan of his since Ottawa days. I'm delighted he's been a hard working Leaf for 2 seasons now. He absolutely knows his role on this team.

Yes an argument could be made Matthews is top 2 Draisaitl is 3. Uses his big body well. Marner in a conversation with 10-15 others (maybe more) when ranking the top 5.

Draisaitl has the advantage of not facing the number 1D, McDavid does. Matthews has to deal with it every shift.

Some equate physicality with defensive ability. I prefer good positioning and being able to get the puck out of trouble areas with a good stick, heads up play or great first pass out of the zone.

I think part of the problem with JT this year is that he's dropped a bunch a weight, you can see it in his face, and that's maybe improved his speed a bit, but he's such a horse down low, he needs that Jagr rump action to keep the cycle going.
