Freddy steals so many games for the Leafs its crazy.

They play horrible defence in front of him one game, then play better the next game in front of Campbell.

The notion that he hasn't played well for 70 games is ludacris.

Our 3rd string goalie is also better than Freddy.

The Leafs D over that span of time:

SA/60: 13th
CA/60: 15th
xGA/60: 15th
SCA/60: 21st
SV%: 30th

If Andersen could be even mediocre (middle of the pack like those stats suggest our D is), the Leafs would be in pretty good shape.

Name a goalie that’s in the league for only making saves that “aren’t his fault”

Not getting noticed while playing protected/easy minutes can't be a good thing... can it?

Most of my learning is from reading HB hot takes, so I’m not 100% sure.

Of course this isn't true but when you allow 5 goals on 24 shots and blame it completely on defense, that isn't entirely accurate either. .792 SP sucks ass

Yup, the Leafs d haven’t been great obviously with the eye test and looking at the stats above but there are plenty of teams giving up equally or more scoring chances a game and their goalies playing better.

The fact that Bernier has been the better goalie over the past year is a little concerning don’t you think?

Oh I forgot, Detroit’s D is stellar.

He’s struggled, but he also hasn’t had much help. Would you rather have a high danger chance with a rebound with a NHL d in front of you or AHL d? But I’m all in for trying a new goalie, I just think some lay too much on him....some stats cans be skewed by shoddy team play I would think? Players quit on Babs? Players quit playing in the Philly game and allowed 5 breakaways on 4 mins. Our 2 NHL D went down with injuries. ( I’m just talking last year ) again, I’m fine with win and you’re in. He’s worse play has been the playoffs JMO

Oh, I completely agree.

I'm just trying to support the notion that people who barf "it's the D it isn't Freddie" are demonstrably wrong. Or, at the very least, I'd like to see evidence that actually supports a counter-argument to my take.

Irrational complainers dont use that.

But yeah, the D and Freddy have both been bad. It is that simple, neither are helping each other out.

The Leafs are statistically middle of the pack in 5 on 5 situations:

SA/60: 13th
CA/60: 15th
xGA/60: 15th
SCA/60: 21st (* admittedly, this should be better)

Freddie is decidedly not middle of the pack in 5 on 5 sitations:

SV%: 30th

Stats can be skewed but when you start mounting more and more evidence based on statistics (like leading the league in 5 hole GA) and the eye-test (letting in brutal gaffe goals at the worst possible time), it becomes clear that Andy has regressed hard.

Leafs need to do better - for sure. Better team defense (I'm looking at you, forward group!) would obviously help Andersen... but his consistently inconsistent play is hard to ignore.

Freddy hasn’t been fine for 70 games now.

Kinda wondering when he will be fine again...doesn’t look promising

- Santo_44

He’s generally not fine except when he’s fine. Leafs are going to structure starts to get try to help get him there. They’re not going anywhere with Campbell who is a competent back up.

He, admittedly, doesn't actually watch hockey games which makes his hot takes the bestest!

Campbell barely got tested yesterday - it's a stretch to say he had a great game.. 19 shots against and 2 goals on those -- and most shots weren't very dangerous.
not sure how campbell was a 'star' yesterday.
(and no, not saying that he should have had one of those goals -- first was on brodie and the second goal was an incredible goal by stützle).

- MaximusAurelius

I thought Campbell played well and both goals against were on complete broken plays and lucky bounces, but I'd for sure go back to Freddy next game.

What we need is for the team to play with the same sense of urgency in front of Freddy that they did last night.

A lot of argumentation here is certainly based on feelings, confirmation bias, and the lack of watching anything but Leafs games.

I think Freddie has regressed and it's getting harder and harder to shift most of the blame to team D. But yeah, team D certainly needs an upgrade... hopefully, last night's effort is a sign of things to come!

I thought Jack looked solid. Granted, it was a back-2-back game and it was the Sens but I'm hoping Campbell puts positive pressure on Freddie.
