Theo Fox: Game 2 @ Lightning
A preview to the Blackhawks second game of the season versus the Lightning.
It's time for the Hawks to get back on the horse and try again to start this season right by living up to the team's professed identity based on working and competing hard. |

I think the goaltender trial-by-fire gets executed tonight.
I expect Kevin Lankinen or Collin Delia to get named the starter. Subban could have been better but JC sees what one of the others can do.
The rest of the line-up I think stays the same with some line juggling involved. I expect the Patty Kane pouty face by the 8 minute mark in the game.

Goals will be fleeting this year so this should take it's place for this season's wager.
I'm feeling good about tonite so I'll go all the way to the 4 minute mark of the second period before PK sports the trademark pout. |

Are they making any changes in the lineup for tonight's game? |

What’s a true rebuild if you don’t take a big leap? If Toews has trouble coming back (let’s hope he gets well) then Stan still needs to take a shot for DuBoise.
Maybe it’s time for the P. Kane trade? They old days are gone this is the season to make big changes. |

And what would the Hawks have to give up? The scuttlebutt is he wants to play for the Habs and the return names I've read are Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Mete. I don't know if that it's any of those or a combo.
Do the Hawks even have anyone on that level they are willing to give up? Dach, DeBrincat, Boqvist?
Somehow I don't think Zach Smith, Nylander and a 4th is gonna do it. |

Putting Toews on LTIR is significant. First, it suggests Johnny is not close to returning. It may suggest he's not returning this year. Why? Because if they use his space, they'd have to drop the amount they went over the cap prior to activating him. Which leads to.....
Why put him on LTIR if you don't plan to use the cap space as a weapon? If you're not willing to use the space (i.e., if Rocky doesn't want to spend extra during the Covid Drought), why not leave him on IR in case he can come back?
Stan may have just hinted to playoff contenders that the Hawks are a good place to park an expiring bad contract while you make additions for the run. |

Could just be they know he is not going to be ready in 10 games or 24 days. In that case there is no downside to putting him on LTIR. |

Sure there is, if the Hawks end up with a bonus overage (which they had last year that carried over to this year), the accrued LTIR can cover at least part of that bonus.

Unless they've changed the CBA in the past two years, pretty sure you don't accrue LTIR space. |

Another detail of the LTIR is that the amount of relief a team gets comes in two pools: a salary relief pool, and a performance bonus relief pool. The salary relief pool is calculated by just taking the player’s cap hit (which is equal to their average salary, excluding performance bonuses). The performance bonus relief pool is equal to the amount of money in performance bonuses a player has, if he has any. The performance bonus relief pool is calculated using any performance bonus in the player’s contract, regardless of whether or not they can still achieve it.
Once the ACSL is calculated and the LTIR is being used, if the team recalls a player, they must have enough relief to cover both their salary and any potential performance bonuses they could get this season. But, these performance bonuses can come out of either the performance bonus relief pool, or the salary relief pool. So, it is not an issue if the player on the LTIR had no performance bonuses, but the recalled player does. For once, the LTIR took the easy way out in a situation.
Accrued was the wrong word. Offset is a better word. Damn, take away my CPA license. |

A quote from CapFriendly....

"When a player is placed on LTIR, their cap hit remains on the teams cap payroll and it continues to count as it always did. It also does not provide the club with additional cap-space savings that can be banked for future use while the team operates above the salary cap." |

Mo, not directing this at you, but what does this really say? How did Chicago get to sign Vermette, Timonenm and Desjadins when Kane went on LTIR? Did that rule change?

We were talking about Toews. They don't get to accrue, or bank, extra space by putting him on LTIR now, as opposed to a day before the LTIR. If they we exactly at the cap if they put a $10.5M player on LTIR, they can add $10.5M in salary today. If they wait until the TDL to add salary, they can still only add $10.5M in salary. Unused LTIR doesn't accrue, according to CapFriendly. This is why I said that putting Toews on LTIR now has no benefit.
If, on the other hand, they were $10.5M under the cap, they would accrue cap space, and would be able to add millions more in salary at the trade deadline. |

So along with Saad's -3 in Colorado's opening game
Olli Maata -2 in over 21 minutes. His defensive partner Doughty was -3.
Jokiarihu -2 in over 14 minutes. |

Nope. Same rule. The Hawks could only do the Kane thing because he was out through the whole regular season. If he came back early, the team would've been over the cap. So, if they make some trades and use Toews' cap space, he's done for the regular season, but would be available for the playoffs (gagged a bit there). |

Hey LA (soon to be Vegas)? I get what you are saying, but aside from it being apples to oranges, since they are all on different teams, I think it's kind of a waste of energy to compare what our current disasters do vs our former disasters. |
