Greetings, Hockeybuzzers!

It's that time again - to exercise your democratic right as a member of Leafs Nation to express your thoughts, which will then be declared fake and challenged in the supreme court of hockey opinion. MTMLGA!

Welcome to the Official 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs Prediction Thread!

You know the drill. Cut and paste the template (below) and fill out your predictions for the year. There are no real rules - put down point totals, beeyotchy insults, general thoughts - I don't particularly care.

AT puck-drop time on opening night I'll get a ref to lock the thread, so your predictions will haunt you like Zaitsev's contract haunts the Senators.

DO NOT MOCK OTHER GUYS' PREDICTIONS IN THIS THREAD!

Do that in the main Leafs threads. But simple rule - if you want to rip a guy a new one for a stupid prediction, you had better have made your own (stupid) predictions first. Otherwise, we will practice social distancing on your ass.

There are no prizes. I will not declare an official winner. Rather, the purpose of this exercise is for you to demonstrate your Leafy geniousness, and to allow others to witness your glory.

So without further ado...

The Leafs will finish:Losing Conference Finals

The main reason for this is:A bad goal

The biggest surprise will be: Marner, he will make the POs his b1tch this year. No more complaints about his Cap hit.

The biggest disappointment will be: Tavares

The unsung hero will be: Muzzin

The goat will be: Matthews

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Marincin, just because.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is):Kerfoot

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was:Simmonds/Thornton. Simmonds will be signed long term after this season.

If I was GM, I would have: Traded Nylander for a tough #1RHD, I like Nylander but we need balance.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs: IT WILL FINALLY CLICK BUT THEY WILL COME UP A LITTLE SHORT, WE WILL ALL BE EXCITED FOR NEXT SEASON.

The Leafs will finish: 1st or 2nd in the North Division

The main reason for this is: Only 3 teams are above average

The biggest surprise will be: Robertson, if he plays

The biggest disappointment will be: Watching Holl play if they're stupid enough to play him

The unsung hero will be: Freddy

The goat will be: In Arizona, maybe

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Holl for some reason.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Simmonds, if healthy.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Bring in Thornton to keep the kids in line, hopefully.

If I was GM, I would have: Made roster space by getting rid of useless players that have no business being on this team like Marincin, Petan, and Holl.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs:

The Leafs will finish: 3rd in North

The main reason for this is: Forwards refuse to play team defense. Andersen is a bottom third starting goalie. .500 against Ottawa.

The biggest surprise will be: Nylander has a great year.

The biggest disappointment will be: Brodie, ends up being no better than what they had.

The unsung hero will be: Marner

The goat will be: Ander5en

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Ander5en, and the reason is that he gives up too many softies

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Holl. Decent, steady Dman.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Trading Kapanen

If I was GM, I would have: Traded Matthews for Jones , (seriously, no idea)

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs: Nothing has changed.

The Leafs will finish: 1st in the North

The main reason for this is: Forward depth, defensive additions, decent backup

The biggest surprise will be: Rielly

The biggest disappointment will be: Dermott

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs: Vancouver's suspect goaltending will make them Toronto's female dog this year.

The Leafs will finish: hoping for 1st or 2nd in division

The main reason for this is: They should do well in a shorten season

The biggest surprise will be: Bogo has a good year

The biggest disappointment will be: Robertson maybe....if he plays. Only because of the high expectations some have. Actually....I'll go with Dermott.

The unsung hero will be: Andersen

The goat will be: 4th line in Arizona

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Holl. I dont think he sucks, just not a top 4 guy yet. But that could change this year.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Andersen, has his issues, but hasnt been as bad as some think.

Alright Wedgie, here goes;

The Leafs will finish: 1st in the North (Canadian) Division

The main reason for this is: Matthews puts up 45 goals in 56 games

The biggest surprise will be: Joe Thornton... Jumbo Joe puts up 40 points.

The biggest disappointment will be: As long as he is still on the team, it's Marincin

The unsung hero will be: Rielly, he puts up 40 points.

The goat will be: Still Marincin if he has a roster spot

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Dermott, I like the re-signing, but he'll get exposed a lot.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Bogosian. I think he surprises a few people with his physical play and has a spot in the top 4

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Brodie

If I was GM, I would have: tried to sign Hoffman ad Hamonic to PTO's

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs: top 3 team in the league and SC Champs.. (eventually, I have to be right)

The Leafs will finish:First in their division.

The main reason for this is: they simply have more talent than the other Canadian teams. And they don't have the mental block of playing Boston and Tampa.

The biggest surprise will be: Simmonds. Yeah, I'm drinking the Kool-aid, but I've always liked this guy. So I'm 100% buying in to his suggestion that this year will be the first year in a while that he is healthy.

The biggest disappointment will be: Jason Spezza. He was brought in to do a job. That job will now be done by Joe Thornton. Look for Spezza to be gradually phased out the Leafs' game day squad.

The unsung hero will be: Andersen. Sure, he gives up soft goals, but he hasn't been the Leafs' problem.

The goat will be: Same as above: Andersen. I get the feeling at the end of the year, barring a Stanley Cup, we will let him walk. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what we got 'til it's gone...

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Bogosian. We seem to forget he was cut from the Sabres last year.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is):
Nylander. Best value contract on the team - not even close.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Signing Simmonds. He's the grit we need.

If I was GM, I would have: Let Spezza go. Yeah, sorry.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs: It's put up or shut up time. I'm not terribly concerned about the regular season - I don't think there is much advantage in finishing as a higher seed. But if the Leafs don't win the North Division in the playoffs, you need to do reconstructive surgery in the offseason, including trading one of the big four.

PLAYER PREDICTIONS

The Forwards:

Kenny Agostino: Don't care

Joey Anderson: Don't care

Alex Barabanov: Others may care, but I don't. He may get a handful of games if we run into injury problems, but he could be replaced easily.

Travis Boyd: Who?

Justin Brazeau: Why?

Adam Brooks: What?

Rourke Chartier: Nope

Pierre Engvall: Fringe NHLer.

Tyler Gaudet: I hope you enjoy the cool swag you got for training camp. Those sweatshirts are sweeeeeet!

Zach Hyman: Interesting that he is starting the season on the 3rd line. I like the guy, but I think his numbers are inflated due to who he has played with - I'd like to see what others can do in his place. Could this be a power move by Dubas to lower his salary expectations? My hope is he demonstrates he can contribute to the 3rd line in a role that better suits his skillset (or lack thereof).

Alexander Kerfoot: I'd rather see him as a winger than a centre. I don't think he has enough jam to be a checking centre. I predict this will end badly.

Mitchell Marner:Doesn't matter what this guy does in the regular season - it's put up or shut up in the playoffs. If he lays an egg in the post-season, it's going to get awfully dark for Mitchy in Leafs Nation. Sorry, fellas, I'm pessimistic he can do it in the playoffs.

Auston Matthews: Top 5 forwards in the NHL. Haterz gonna hate. Will be top 3 again for Richard Trophy.

Ilya Mikheyev: Leafs Nation has over-rated this guy. Expect a sophmore slump, and the Leafs Nation pendulum to swing from "best player ever" to "I have tar - does anyone have feathers?"

William Nylander: Will continue to be under-rated by 100% of non-Leafs fans, and 40% of Leafs fans. Best player/$ on the team. Other GMs know this, though, so I would trade him for a stud RHD. But I mean STUD!!!

Nic Petan: Don't know, don't care.

Nicholas Robertson: Leafs fans have over-rated this dude. It's not that I am saying he is bad - it's that I'm saying he's still early in his development curve. Look for him to be on the taxi squad, but he won't get many games, and he won't make any positive contributions when he does suit up. Patience, my Leafy friends.

Scott Sabourin: I have never heard of this guy before training camp, and I kinda wish it had stayed that way.

Wayne Simmonds: I have drunk the blue Kool-aid!!! I predict he will have a bounce-back season, based upon being off for a year and allowing his body to heal. I hope he gets elevated to the 2nd line. The Leafs need his grit (i.e., the grit he had 5 years ago).

Jason Spezza: I wish him nothing but the best, but with the signing of Thornton, we have no need for Spezza anymore. Look for him to lose his roster spot.

John Tavares: I'm starting to wonder if the Leafs would have been better off keeping Kadri, not signing JT and keeping their salary cap powder dry for a RHD. I'm not going to judge him on last year, as he was injured, but I still predict a decline from his numbers from two years ago. I don't see him making those around him better. I hope I end up eating these words.

Joe Thornton: I hope that Leafs Nation sets their expectations at a reasonable level for this guy. We did not sign him to score 60 points (and by that, I mean a 60 point pace over 82 games). If he can score at a .5 pts/game pace, I'll be wildly happy. I like this signing.

Jimmy Vesey: I guess the strategy was to go out and sign a bushel of 3rd line players for cheap, because that's all this guy is. My hope is that I don't hate him, but I know I'm never going to love him.

The Defence:

Zach Bogosian: I suspect this guy will become my whipping boy this year. I don't think he will make a positive impact on the team.

TJ Brodie: Won't be bad, but won't be good enough to make a significant difference. I fear the Leafs' defence is still sub-par.

Travis Dermott: This is his last chance, and I don't think he is going to seize it.

Justin Holl: He's fine in a limited role, but we are dead if he needs to play top 4.

Mac Hollowell: Don't know or care

Teemu Kivihalme: I have no idea who he is.

Mikko Lehtonen: It would be foolish of me to make a prediction, as I have no idea what this guy can do.

Timothy Liljegren: Not this year.

Martin Marincin: I no longer hate this guy, as he is a spare part.

Jake Muzzin: His injury last year showed us how valuable this guy is. I hope he stays healthyy, because he is the most important defenceman we have.

Morgan Rielly: Look for him to have a better year this year, as he is healthy. Won't be as good as two years ago, but will be better than last.

Calle Rosen: Who?

Rasmus Sandin: Not this year.

The Goalies:

Frederik Andersen: Leafs fans need to shut the frank up - this guy is good enough. He's looked bad the past few years because the defence has been horrible - and I think it will be again.

Jack Campbell: I like this guy - I think he can be a 1B more than a backup.

Aaron Dell: I have no idea

Michael Hutchinson: Not an NHL goalie

The Leafs will finish: 5th in North Division

The main reason for this is: It is almost like Playoff hockey, and they always choke.

The Leafs will finish: 3rd in the division

The main reason for this is: Their defense still isn't reliable enough and the lack of depth in the bottom 6 will catch up to them. They are also old and ugly.

The biggest surprise will be: Rielly. Guy will have a monster season.

The biggest disappointment will be: Joe Thornton

The unsung hero will be: Kerfoot

The goat will be: Wayne Simmonds

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Wayne Simmonds. He's slow, he takes dumb penalties and won't help the team at all.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Mikheyev. Guy should be used in a more offensive role since he can dig up the puck along the boards for his more talented players. He can also finish just fine.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Sign T.J. Brodie, despite him being slightly overpaid.

If I was GM, I would have: Tried to sign Rielly to an extension before he explodes offensively.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs: They are not as good as you think they are, but they can easily win the division or advance in the playoffs with all the talent up front if the defense holds up.

The Leafs will finish: 2nd in Division.

The main reason for this is: mediocre defense and goaltending, best offense in NHL.

The biggest surprise will be: Wayne Simmonds playing really well.

The biggest disappointment will be: defense not better than last seasons.

The unsung hero will be: Hyman.

The goat will be: Spezza. Should have stopped after last season - won't be very good and will lose his spot on the team mid-season.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Nylander (floater -- adds no value to this Leafs team since Matthews, Marner, Tavares already there).

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Dermott (injury free, he'll be earn more playing time than Lehtonen, Sandin -- solid on top4).

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: add Thornton and Simmonds.

If I was GM, I would have: traded Nylander and Andersen.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs:
same old issues will come up yet again this season (Andersen imploding in playoffs, Nylander disappearing in playoffs, no good d-partner for Rielly to play freely)

PLAYER PREDICTIONS

The Forwards:

Kenny Agostino: AHL

Joey Anderson: AHL

Alex Barabanov: 3rd/4th line - will be ok but nothing special probably. next year he'll not play for Leafs, since Robertson ends up taking his spot on the roster.

Travis Boyd: -

Justin Brazeau: -

Adam Brooks: -

Rourke Chartier: -

Pierre Engvall: solid, let's hope Dubas keeps him and not gives him the Gauthier-Timashov-Trevor Moore treatment.

Tyler Gaudet: -

Zach Hyman: one of the most important players on this team. Will earn himself a 4y @3.5mln AAV extension.

Alexander Kerfoot: let's hope he'll get more PP time. might be better on the wing than on C.

Mitchell Marner: great season - points leader in regular season for Leafs, and in the whole league - winning the Art Ross trophy.

Auston Matthews: goals won't be an issue - will lead the league in goals. let's hope he'll start playing to his potential in the d-zone as well (he should focus more on becoming Datsyuk 2.0 than a Roenick 2.0 type of player...)

Ilya Mikheyev: solid, great on PK, and he'll get solid point totals.

William Nylander: 4th in scoring on this team in regular season, but the floating issues remain. just has a very mediocre hockey sense - in particular shown by his lack of on-ice awareness on defensive positioning.

Nic Petan: AHL

Nicholas Robertson: by the end of regular season he has earned a full-time spot on this roster. bright future for this guy - let's hope fans and media have some patience with him.

Scott Sabourin: who?

Wayne Simmonds: fan favorite by mid-February.

Jason Spezza: will not be a pretty season for Spezza. Unfortunately, just one season to many to his impressive career.

John Tavares: solid season by Tavares, 3rd in points on this team after Marner and Matthews.

Joe Thornton: great move by Dubas to add him. let's hope the Marner-Thornton passing on the PP will be as good as expected.

Jimmy Vesey: meh. will play most games, but was not a priority to add him. Would rather see Engvall taking his roster spot. Still, will get 10-12 goals during the regular season.

The Defence:

Zach Bogosian: not good. very very slow.

TJ Brodie: not as good as expected, and might slip out of top 4 with Rielly-Muzzin-Dermott and eventually even Liljegren outplaying him..

Travis Dermott: will have a good season, and will end up 2nd best d-man this season after Rielly.

Justin Holl: ok for bottom d-pairing, nothing more.

Mac Hollowell: AHL

Teemu Kivihalme: AHL

Mikko Lehtonen: 6th/7th D. not as good as many think. will battle for a spot with Bogosian.

Timothy Liljegren: will earn his spot as a top4 d-man end of the season.

Martin Marincin: Marty is back -- and actually better option than Bogosian and Lehtonen, in particular because of his PK abilities.

Jake Muzzin: he actually survived that injury?? good for him. solid on the 2nd pair.

Morgan Rielly: very good season for Toronto's best d-man, unfortunately still not a good d-partner provided to him.

Calle Rosen: AHL

Rasmus Sandin: will end up on bottom pair with Holl end of season.

The Goalies:

Frederik Andersen: .912 in regular season. implodes again in playoffs. last season for him with Leafs.

Jack Campbell: ok backup -- nothing special.

Aaron Dell: AHL

Michael Hutchinson: AHL

Woll: the brick Woll will end up playing 5 games in regular season after a super start with the Marlies. Full-time backup with Leafs in NHL next season.

[quote=Atomic Wedgie]Greetings, Hockeybuzzers!

The Leafs will finish: 4th

The main reason for this is: the season will be more play-off style matches

The biggest surprise will be: Thorton staying on the 1st line all season

The biggest disappointment will be: Marner scoring less then Mathews

The unsung hero will be: Kerfoot

The goat will be: The Coaching staff

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Simmonds is just too slow for today's game.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is):Bogosian can do enough in all areas to be a solid 4/5. Cup win boosted confidence too.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Let UFA's go to sign Brodie

If I was GM, I would have: Pulled a Chayka and bailed before it starts to get real ugly under the North Division spotlight.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs:

They won't win a play-off round even in the North Division.

The Leafs will finish: 2nd in Division

The main reason for this is: Strong offense and a resurgence from Anders7n

The biggest surprise will be: Joe Thornton

The biggest disappointment will be: Nick Robertson

The unsung hero will be: Jake Muzzin

The goat will be: Travis Dermott

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Jack Campbell (35 great games in his career at 27 years old does not make him the greatest backup on earth)

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Jimmy Vesey (Hype destroyed him and he isn’t good, but he’s a fine 3rd liner)

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Sign Brodie

If I was GM, I would have: Gone back in time and sign Matthews and Marner for slightly less

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2020-21 Leafs: They weren’t as good as the hype, but they are a really good team
