yup, small gatherings make sense. I'm kinda glad to be honest for my grandmother, instead of being 10 people at a time or something it'll just be very small groups visiting her (and taking the necessary measures, obviously)

when did advent calendars become a thing? never heard of it until recently and now its all over the place.

It's been a thing for a while with us Lutherans (AKA "Catholic Lite"). Going back 200 hundred years almost (EDIT: at least for German Lutherans).

The ones with the chocolates have been around since the 1950s. I remember one being a bit-plot in Bad Santa, but that's gotta be too long ago to cause any recent resurgence.
