They’ll now have nearly $10 million to re-sign Mathew Barzal, likely along with Andy Greene, then potentially Derick Brassard, Matt Martin and others

That is a lot of signing to do when Barzal will be taking up about $7M of that $10M!!!!

Ink Barzal to an 8 year deal!!!! Sign him for 2, and prepare for his departure from this old squad. 8 Years or bust!

8 million is a lot of money to forfeit and very convenient for a team needing to sign a young star player. I'm sure a backdoor deal was made, maybe a organizational position with a good salary was presented.

He's still getting paid. He's not officially retiring, just not playing. He'll be placed on LTIR.

"What Johnny Boychuk’s retirement means for the Islanders" - Title

"New York Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk announced his retirement Wednesday due to an eye injury suffered during the 2019-20 NHL season." - ESPN.com

"The retirement is financially advantageous for the Islanders. Boychuk, who had two years left on his contract, will be placed on long-term injured reserve, removing his $6 million cap hit from their ledger in 2020-21 and giving the Islanders around $9.9 million in cap space." - ESPN.com

https://www.espn.com/nhl/...-choice-retire-eye-injury

So the NHL has a "kind of retirement" policy?

It's Semantics. He's not playing any more, so he is effectively retiring but he'll be on LTIR and will be getting paid. The Islanders still own his rights. He's on the books but not on the Cap. It's really not that hard to understand.

Due to an eye injury. If he didn’t injure his eye than he couldn’t retire with pay and wouldn’t have. I don’t get the conspiracy theory. He planned on a skate hitting his eye? Now when or if the Dr. deems Ladds knees not fit for play I agree there’s a bit of “Robidas Island” going on, but if you can get away with it then use it. This will be in place in every CBA in the future as it helps the team and the players as well.

It's not hard to understand, but when you OFFICIALLY announce retirement it means just that. The steps are easy:

1) Officially announce retirement
2) Sign retirement paperwork
3) Contract becomes null & void (unless it's a 35+ contract)

David Clarkson and Nathan Horton are examples of players who spent the rest of their careers on LTIR. Everyone knew they were done, but you know what they didn't do? They didn't officially announce their retirement until after the contracts. Why? Because it's a loophole, which needs to be fixed next CBA, to manipulate the salary cap.

Now this isn't a debate about what it means, but it is a statement to clarify the significance of the situation.

1) Official retirement and Boychuk leaves 8 million on the table which is odd.

OR

2) Official retirement and LTIR loophole is used, which hopefully costs the Islanders a draft pick for circumventing the salary cap.

It goes over Flyer fans heads because we are not used to cheating, so I guess it would make more sense to Islander fans. I'm pretty sure they still don't understand the concept of offsides and scoring goal...means the goal doesn't count.

Do you always sound like an 8 year old girl? What do you care about his retirement or LTIR? Keep it moving Nancy.

Stay away from ex devils, sign Barzal max. Hickey is signed use him. There cement Trotsky-voodoo style of hockey will only get them so far. This team still has too many late aged forwards, need to get some youth on this team.

You’re trying way too hard. Dude is legit injured. Idk if he’s retired or ltir but it doesn’t matter to me. I hope he gets paid, NYI shouldn’t have to eat that cap though.

Someone mentioned Ladd though. Yeah, that would be different. If he ends up being “injured” that would seem sketchy

Well, we DID bribe that linesman 40 years ago to ignore that offsides and win that first Cup.........even though we don't understand the concept of offsides and goal-scoring.
