Anyone catch the article in The Athletic that Rossi and Yohe put together about failed Penguin trades/moves that almost happened? They teased that Selanne almost became a Penguin and Backstrom, guessing we were going to take him over Staal. I know there was talk previously about how Pittsburgh almost drafted Subban but picked Angelo Esposito. Just curious what the main moves were since I dont subscribe to The Athletic.

The Jordan Staal pick remains one of the most interesting elements of this generation and how different things could have been. If we drafted Toews or Backstrom and they performed the same way they have in their careers, (A big difference between being #3 on PITT versus #1 in CHI/WSH), I bet Malkin would have been traded after the 2009 Cup run or collapse in 2010.

Everyone wanted Backstrom. Bruins were pissssssed that they missed him. Kessel turned out well for them though, and actually worked out well for all the teams. Except the Blues.

Yes... So many "what ifs". Could you imagine Sid, Malkin and Toews down the middle for those few years? Yikes. I agree however, Geno would have been the guy sent out. So fortunately for us, they drafted Staal.

Interesting. So if deaths have stayed steady but so many have died from the disease then where did the balancing number come from? Less deaths in vehicle accidents from staying home? Less germs being swapped cause masking? I wonder where the counter weight is in that argument....

Misclassification.

According to the article, there's a sudden and unexpected decrease in all other causes of death in 2020--heart disease, respiratory disease, flu, pneumonia, etc--which goes against well-established long term trends and almost exactly equals the increase in deaths from C19.

Personally, I don't see any way the NHL plays 20-21. Most teams will operate at a massive loss without fans in the seats, and I see zero indication that "society" is ready to go back to normal, packing 20k people or even 5k people into arenas for any reason--music, sports, whatever. TV revenue is nowhere near enough, bubble hockey is a non-starter, and travel restrictions are a major impediment.

Everything will hinge on the vaccine. If the league starts in February, they could probably pull off around two months without fans. April seems to be the targeted month for mass inoculation. So, if they do a shortened season at 40ish games, two months with no fans followed by two months with fans, they can pull it off IMO.

I also think they should do a baseball-like schedule which could help them sneak in back-to-backs without teams being exhausted by travel. For example, Pens travel to NYR for a four-game season series and since there are no fans, they could do two home/two away games and knock out four games in fives days.

I saw the john Hopkins thing as well. Also a month or so ago the amount of positive flu cases was 86% lower than previous years. Now you cant get comparables and the CDC lumps covid, with the flu so you cant find the number of people who had the flu so far in 2020 compared to 2019.

MAYBE the "canadian factor" vs the "russian factor" would mean Geno would be the one sent out....maybe Toews would be taking a paycut since he would have lower numbers as a 3rd liner. I almost guarantee he'd take the $6M/year.
Crosby and Toews would probably end up playing together at some point.

It kills mostly elderly people with comorbidities.

Johns Hopkins just released a study (before they had to hide it). Said, Covid has not increased mortality in the US.

Genevieve Briand, assistant program director of the Applied Economics master’s degree program at Johns Hopkins University, critically analyzed the impact that COVID-19 had on U.S. deaths. According to her, the impact of COVID-19 on deaths in the United States can be fully understood by comparing it to the number of total deaths in the country.

According to study, “in contrast to most people’s assumptions, the number of deaths by COVID-19 is not alarming. In fact, it has relatively no effect on deaths in the United States.”

I was seeing CDC numbers a few months ago that showed your deaths so far, to that point or close to that point, this year were up over 200k than the annual average. That annual average of course is over decades of heart attacks, car accidents, cancer, flus, suicides, OD's...every death computed....so how is it up by over 200k this year over the annual average?
