Zemgus Girgensons should petition to have his actual number changed to C, he's that good. He's our furniture captain. |

Ottawa Senators - Colin White and it's not even close.
Pros: Soft spoken, leads by example, loved in the room. Versatile player
Cons: at risk of being ruined by Ottawa's ineptitude of development. Lambasted by local media for a disasterous season on a bad team with a carousel of linemates after signing (what will be in a couple years) a very hometown friendly deal.
Who local media wants for the pretty pictures and interviews : that Tkachuk kid.
Why it's a terrible idea: You then handcuff the boy to play the way he is meant to play. It would be like making Brad Marchand captain. He plays like a jerk - he does donkey things on the ice. He's not as effective if he's not being a twat. If you make Brady captain, he has to behave like one. You ruin the player. |

Eklund: Name your team's "Secret Captains?" Should they be given the "C." - Eklund
As with the case of Bobby Clarke, Flyers Captain Giroux should retain the C until either he leaves the roster, or as with Clarke he is in a position where he must give it up-- Clarke became a player/coach and gave up the C...until he no longer was a coach, and was given back the C-- Giroux of course is not in Clarke's status, however I believe he's earned the right to retire Captain...Unless he leaves the roster. There certainly can be co-captain(s) on the roster without the C; that would be a 'natural' situation that would arise through team needs, roster and trends. |

The Devils traded their last captain at the deadline when Andy Greene went to the Islanders. Maybe the best replacement for Andy Greene was Blake Coleman, but Coleman had already been traded to Tampa. Taylor Hall was long gone too.
A lot of Devil fans think Nico Hischier or Jack Hughes should be the future captain. But right now the best choice would be Kyle Palmeri. The problem is his contract has only one season remaining and many folks think you want a player who is definitely going to be part of the team longer. I say name him anyway and try to re-sign him. If you have to trade him at the deadline, you do it.
Best SECRET Captain would be PK Subban. |

I believe Carey may be a leader in the room, and Weber may be the actual captain, but the "real" captain, and likely the next captain would be Brendan Gallagher. He is the heart and soul of the Habs, as seen in the playoffs last year. His work ethic, passion, and drive are unmatched on the team. |

For the Devils - it has got to be Nico. PK Will be gone in the expansion draft. Fitzy will spin a deal for Seattle to take him and a future pick. It unloads some cap space, gets Seattle closer to the floor much the same way Vegas was built. |

The "C" should be re-assigned with a new coach
This has always baffled me. Captains are picked by head coaches. The relationship between Captain and coach is crucial. And yet, when a coach is replaced the Captain "C" isn't also examined for fear that taking away the letter would somehow hurt the player's ego in some way...That is ridiculous. The new coach should be allowed to look at this assignment as he does every other aspect of the lines, personnel, etc... Any player who is captaining a team which is playing so poorly that the coach is sacked holds no claim to such a luxury.
-Eklund
Yeah, no. Captains are an organisational selection more than a coach. The coach has input, but more than just the coach has a say.
The coach has free reign for the most part to pick the alternates, though. |

Makes total sense Ek. When Scotty Bowman replaced Bryan Murray as Red Wings head coach he should've taken the captaincy away from Steve Yzerman. Maybe he should've given it to Kris Draper. |

Derek Stepan.
Tocchet has said he is like having another coach in the room. I think I also once read that he was voted by peers as the most likely player to be a successful coach once he hangs them up.
Vocal, intense student of the game, a natural teacher, a relationship builder. He is everything a team should want captaining their group! |

Eklund: Name your team's "Secret Captains?" Should they be given the "C." - Eklund
Foligno is probably the captain we need and deserve (also his dad had that role once upon a time) , he's a hard working player with that scoring touch . Secret captain would have to be Atkinson, he's the last vestige of the Nash era. Apparently he's a community favorite and he's always played to show the naysayers that size doesn't matter in the NHL. |

Thomas Chabot is very quiet. He is modest. He will be the Ottawa Senators captain soon enough.

Aren't the Habs the only team in the league where the players vote for the captain? Why did they pick Weber if Gallagher is the true leader?

I agree with Queenie’s assessment that Coleman would have been a great captain but I don’t see Hall as Captain material.
Currently I think we have 4 choices (Hughes is not captain material anytime soon).
1) Palmeri. He should be captain and should be extended. Agree100%
2)Zajac. I know he makes too much money for his place in the lineup but he is the longest tenured Devil and dies al the things you want a young player to learn (hard working defense). The guy is not a top line center but holds his own when he has had to play there That being said like Pslmeri he is on his last year of his contract. I see NJ bringing him back at a fraction of his salary. He seems to want to stay inNJ.
3) Hischier. Long term he is captain material but I’d rather give him a chance to develop a little further before burdening him with the C.
4) Subban - as you said he is the captain without a letter. He is keeping team loose and the players appear to love him. Problem is he is new to the team makes a ton of money and has not earned it on the ice. I hope he can get closer to his old self as he seems like the type of player you want around the kids. |

Dustin Brown. He has been the Captain of the Kings since 2008, even if they officially took the "C" away from him in 2016. |

Why would a new coach strip away the captaincy and potentially alienate a key player on the roster? The benefit is modest at best, while the negative impact could be significant. Like let's take Laviolette coming into Washington. Even if he thinks Ovechkin is a selfish loser and wants someone like Carlson or Oshie or Wilson to change the culture, well then as a coach he can give those guys an A and rely on them more and more. We all know these letters are mostly symbolic anyway. You don't gain much by embarassing Ovechkin and taking away the C. There's a reason why this rarely ever happens. |
