My wife hates him. He was a wild dude, a classical composer, a wicked guitar player. He’d bring all these strains of things he dug together in his albums - jazz, recordings of his band talking, these beautiful greasy doo wop songs, straight up rock. He was serious as poop, no drugs in the band, he was in charge and they all did what he said.

He was my favourite as a kid. I saw him all the time

Don't get me wrong, I get that he was a talented musician and guitarist and that he pushed boundaries and was uncompromising and singular in vision.

But I just don't get it and it's not for a lack of trying. It's utterly impenetrable to me (though I don't "hate" him).

Which I find so fascinating -- how different people can be so passionate about music that I can't, for the life of me, comprehend (and vice versa, of course).
