Plenty of room for more defense. Not only in case of injuries and also because one of those players you mentioned is one hit from retirement (and plays like he knows that), and the other is a 19 year old. Might have worked for Makar, might even work again, but there's no sure thing.

Makar, Girard, Johnson, Cole, and Graves are all sure bets to make the roster next season, assuming no one is traded, i just don't see bring in another full time Dman while still giving Timmins and Byram playing time making sense, they also just got Dennis Gilbert in the Zadorov/Saad trade aswell, so signing Vatanen seems like over kill. Sakic is also very frugal in his FA signings

My gut tells me we sign a depth Dman to a 1 or 2 year deal max to a low salary no more than $2M AAV
