Zary’s a great pick, kid makes scoring goals look easy! He was ranked 16th oa. Has decent size at 6’, I really like this pick. Plus he’s from the Dub!
We add 2 3rd round picks as well, we’ll done Flames!

Yes Calgary did great with their asset getting more, unlike the Devils who with their 20th pick s*** in the bed.

3 1st rounders, I don’t think I’d complain. It’s not as if you took Klimchuk or Poirier!

Wallinder still available. I hope the Flames make a move up the board and grab him.

Watched him play a number of times this year when the blazers matched against my home town rockets. You guys will be happy with this kid, congrats!

its hard to know if this is who they really wanted. It could be like Treliving said on the radio, in their pick range, there is a few players they are happy with, so it might not be that we got the specific guy, but there was a group of players that were all relatively close and would be a toss up

Hope it works out!!

My concern is the knock on him is his skating/acceleration
in the NHL, its moving to speed
I feel we already have a couple "slower" skaters in our core in Tkachuk and Monahan.

I was nervous when we moved down the second time that Tre was going to REALLY go off the board so to see him scoop up the BPA while acquiring two 3rds is huge.

Personally earlier in the season when we were on the verge of potentially missing the playoffs I had Zary as a player I liked in the 10-15 range. Even while his stock fell I didn’t have him dropping out of the top 20 to get him at 24 had me ecstatic. Also another thing to like is that Iginla also played for Kamloops and is currently an owner of the team not that that means anything.

As confident as I am in gawdin and Emilio petterson our system was missing a high end C and with this draft also lacking talent at the position at the top end this is a bonus.

Tomorrow I’m hoping for one or both of the sea dog’s D: poirier and villeneuve since we literally have no one back there in the system.

Another bold hope is to pull another Dustin Wolf and either get zary’s teammate garand or the London knights brochu in the 6/7th rounds. Both were top 10 goalies in the CHL this year but are being overlooked due to size.

Wouldn't mind seeing a trade up in the 2nd to try to nab Wallinder or Grans

Heard last night that we will not be getting that pick for the Neal-Looch trade. I thought the league said we were?

Anyone know the status of that?

Yeah I am thinking there is someone in the 2nd round that they really like and were going to use those 3rds to maybe make it happen.

The NHL awarded us the pick but its up to the Oilers if we get it this year or next, as per the stipulations of the trade.

Also, the Oilers do not have to decide if the Flames get the pick this year or next, until the start of the third round picks this morning .

And there go Grans and Wallinder. The draft is an area where I'd like to see more aggression out of Tre - maybe there's a guy lurking that they like and no one else has on their radar, but he's walked away from 3 pretty solid dmen so far in the draft by trading down and not trading back up... Same thing last year, thought he should have moved back up in the draft to nab Leason/Foote(who should have been the pick anyways)/Kaliev/Lavoie/Hoglander or Sogaard.

Can't complain too loudly as the Flames do well in later rounds, but seems like they just aren't very aggressive when it comes to the draft.

Good start for the Flames in round one. Liked what Treiliving did. He and the scouting staff have been doing a great job over the last five years or so. I love seeing the team being built from the draft and developing players. Detroit was so good at that for so long.

Believe VAN has made its best offer to Markstrom camp already. Wait and see mode until Friday. From the sounds of things I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits the open market. IF it happens, the Flames could be a front-runner. Canucks could circle back, but this will be fun to watch

Yeah lets see what he does before we give him the final grade. Hard to believe that Mange was found so late.

Won't be surprised if we move one of our picks to grab his rights before he becomes a UFA. I'd be just fine with Markstrom in a Flames uniform. Backlund, Klylington, Lindholm and Anderrson would make him feel pretty comfortable with this team.

I think he’s tight with Lindholm. I agree, the fit makes a ton on sense. Flames need a goalie who can steal games. Markstrom has experience of playing in a Canadian market so you don’t have to worry about him adjusting and gets to go to another team with fellow Swedes.

Makes a lot of sense on paper.
