If he is such an amazing asset, why would Winnipeg have any desire to move him? Whenever I get wind of a super star asset being available, I always wonder what the underlying issue is that would leave a team even considering a trade. Obviously NJ minus the assets it would cost to land him, plus Laine ,are still not contenders, so it is a non-starter for the Devils.

Because they have a lot of gaps to fill. They need a good number 2 center and help on defense.

Hard to believe anyone will even come close to paying that price. I sure wouldn't.

I agree with you, it’s more about the organization showing loyalty to their captain and the ones who already agreed to long term deals. I don’t begrudge Laine for thinking he will prove himself to be a 50 goal scorer and wait to cash in. He’s always had confidence. But there is only so much cap space to go around.

If the Jets trade Laine for they may fill one hole but would create a larger one in Laine's spot. What the Jets have to get is a true, play making center to play with Laine and Ehlers and two big, physical, stay at home d-men. Laine isn't going anywhere.
