Matheson will get 9 goals and 25 assists this year playing with Marino and and Scevior will end up within 10 points of Hornqvist and everyone will be talking about how great this Trade was.

I like how RW assumes there is so much “perceived” value on a guy like Hornqvist when he has absolutely no actual knowledge of what was out there in terms of offers

Maybe Florida was the only team prepared to offer anything, so do we let Horn play with McCann and sink the 3rd line and then complain about it all year or roll the dice?

I am not sure this will end up being a terrible trade for us. I love Horny, and wish him the best. He is definately entering the end of his career and injuries are a real concern.

As for how bad and long Matheson's contract is, I still think I would roll the dice on him at 4.8m ages 26-32, than Horny's 5.3m ages 33 - 36.

Matheson has showed his pedigree in the past and conistantly can give you 8-10 goals, and 25-30 points. I know its a crap stat, but he only had one year since entering the league with a bad +/-. I will wait to judge this one.

Really baffled why he wouldn’t just keep Hornqvist. Bad contract that was a good idea move, but he still had a positive impact on the on ice product and by all reports everyone loved the guy. Why go out of your way to make the team worse in moving Hornqvist by acquiring a different bad contract at a position you know you’re overloaded in all the while ADDING cap to the book?

I think that train of thought works better if he weren’t specifically an LD. We have Johnson who won’t be moved, Riikola who’s a cheap guy that did really well in a bottom pairing role, POJ who’s as cheap as possible and could potentially break the roster this season, and Petterson who is 100% better than Matheson all vying for the two spots behind Dunoulin on that side. Since Johnson won’t budge, the only logical next step is to trade Petterson and then our team becomes that much worse having Matheson or God forbid Johnson playing second pairing minutes.

I’ll eat my shorts if the guy that gets moved is Johnson and the ultimate result is an overpaid but capable 3LD in Matheson.
