how much does Brodie cost? 6 or 6.5?
Lets say you can get Brodie/Demelo for the same as AP
a right side of
AP
Holl
Dermott (playing rd)
or
Brodie
Holl
Demelo
glad its not my call, but I like the top one better.
I am fine delaying the decision on what to do once Rielly is up for a new contract for 2 seasons to see how the AP effect works.
You can trade Rielly or Willy at that point, sandin may develope enough to replace Rielly - senstroll
I'm hoping AP signs for 6 x 8 million. I'd be happy with that!

who is the Leafs last comparable RHD to AP?

And I'll repeat myself once more: adding a perennial Norris Trophy candidate who has captained his team to a Stanley Cup is more than just addressing a "gap".
Rielly-Petro would be matched up against other teams "big" lines -- you know, those Scoring 1 lines that play around 20 mins a game?
Right now the Leafs are playing Rielly with bottom 6 pairing guys who are utterly miscast. If you add a Petro you create an absolute monster on par with Werenski-Jones as the best pair in the NHL.
You seem horrified at the notion of Holl/Lehtonen soaking up 2nd pair D minutes and I say that they'll be just fine with Muzzin. And if they poop the bed, you make a trade for a 2nd pair guy who is a better fit.
DeMelo is an example of a guy who everyone (minus a couple of posters here) seems to think would be an upgrade for the Leafs 2nd pair. He made 900k this past season (and will demand a raise for next season). Is he a unicorn? I'm sure there are other examples of cheap 2nd pair guys the Leafs could trade for if things went south. - mjones242
And at the risk of sending this in circles... I do not think that adding a guy who is what you said right now, and throwing the idea that he may not be that guy through years 3-7 while we are stuck with the caphit and NMC is a rational approach.
I do not think that starting a guy like Holl with top 4 minutes and expecting it to work when it didn't down the stretch last year is a rational approach.
I don't think tying up all that cap into one guy and expecting to address these other issues down the road is a rational approach.
I don't think handcuffing yourself and pretending injuries, regression in other areas, players not developing as anticipated (dermott) is a rational approach.
The demand with AP is essentially to go all in and throw caution to the wind just because of who he is this second in time... And it's just so damn leafy to ignore all the red flags and assume everything will be fine going forward because of the love for one singular player that I can't get past it.
This team is not the 'one player away from a cup' team regardless of how bad people want that one player. They just aren't. The teams core has barely made it past puberty. |

I bet you can get him for less. I think the guys in the middle get squeezed and I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to stay in Canada since his wife has MS and he probably has Leaf pyjamas.
I don’t see them bringing in a second D under either scenario. Develop from within, play Lehtonen on the right and trade Dermott unless he can be signed for a very small number.
Use the money for Mik, one year 3rd and 4th line guys and maybe a longer deal for a 3rd line C if you can find someone.
I move out whatever combo of AJ, Kerfoot, Engvall, Dermott needed.

Going to be $9 unless he is so excited to test the market that he leaves $ in the table. He will also want full term which why he is asking for a bonus at the end - to make a buyout harder. |

I personally like the second one better. I've seen a lot of Demelo and he seems to be a lot more capable in the top 4 than Holl... And Im saying that as someone who considers himself a Holl fan.
But I'm with you on the glad it's not my call part. No matter what doobie does here it's gonna be wrong with a good chunk of people. |

As per reports they already have. What they havent done is give him a good contract structure(signing bonuses, and buyout protection), and a NMC

Apparently, he has turned down 8x8 from the Blues. I am guessing it will be a 7 x 8.5 |

The truth is, if the Blues did indeed offer that hell likely end up taking it.

I believe they already offered more $$. Optimistically 7 x 8.5 ....realistically 7 x 9'ish ....pessimistically 7 x 10 after a bidding war.
All with a full NMC and big signing bonuses beginning in year 3.

according to some reports, he's turned down an 8 yr / $64M contract from the Blues.. It's gonna take more than 8M to get him here |

I don't know if it is true but Kypreos and others have said that is the offer on the table.. Also, that salary structure is important to him as well, which the Blues are not going to budge on |

i read that there is issues with how the contract would be structured.
signing bonuses and NMC etc.
doesnt sound like so far stl is willing to play ball in regards to those things.
not all teams can hand over huge $$ signing bonuses...in 2020
