He doesn't. They reported that Marner had the biggest beef with Babs, and that's part of the reason that he asked to be overpaid by millions. He wanted compensation for having to put up with him.
The entire team had had enough. |

There was also the rumour that Marner's camp was upset that they didn't get the same ELC bonuses as Matthews, so they felt they were owed that money - hence asking for more than market value. |

Pierre Lebrun claimed Toronto couldn't get Matheson for Nylander 2 years ago.
I'm guessing Florida would have poop themselves if they got that deal today |

A stay at home shot blocker, that can fight, play on the PK and make a first pass.
Is that so much to ask..
AP would be great, but a few role players to complete this poorly assembled team and things change quickly. - bixll
Krug has heart, I'll give him that but an older, smallish d-man for probably $6 to $7 Million - no thanks. Pay a couple of extra sheckels and get Pietrangelo.

the drop off after AP is huge.
Vatenen
Shattenkirk
Brodie (he play right side?)
you have lesser fill ins like Gudas, Tanev, TVR demelo..but none of these move the needle much compared to last season - senstroll
How much of an upgrade over Ceci is Brodie for example? And what does the rest of the team look like saving the $5M or so. We can’t grow the cap our way out of this. We will start to see new holes in a few years when we have to deal with Rielly,Lehtonen, Sandin, Lijegren, Hyman. |

Out of the whole League, those are the only options?
Here’s the free agent list. You can’t find somebody for $5M or so?
https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/free-agents/ufa/
If that doesn’t work, let’s trade. Scroll down to $5.5M (Parayko territory) and start looking. There’s lots of good defencemen that we could trade for.
https://www.spotrac.com/n...kings/cap-hit/defenseman/
We need a top pairing guy to play with Rielly. If Dubas can get AP in a way that doesn’t screw the team going forward, I’ll change my name to JFJ2 and be very happy.i just don’t see how he can do it. - Canada Cup
There's no vacuum. Everything has to be an option to improve the D.
The mid-level UFA option - they have 3 million once Mikheyev is signed so signing a UFA will require some sacrifice to the existing lineup. Andersen or Johnsson likely. So for that option to work is there a market for one of those guys? And do you like one of the 4-5 milly guys enough b/c they're going to want 4+ year deals. How is Tanev, Brodie, or Hamonic going to look in years 2, 3, 4 and beyond?
The trade option - is there a market at all and what is the price tag for a good affordable top 4 RHD? Does Andersen and/or Johnsson get you that piece?
The other trade option - Nylander. What does he fetch you on the market in terms of good young RHD? And how easily can his offense be replaced with a UFA?
The big fish option - IF AP wants to sign here and IF the price is fair they'd have to clear about 6+ million. Johnsson and Andersen wouldn't be enough once you factored in replacements. It'd have to be them and Kerfoot replaced with guys making peanuts. OR it'd have to be Nylander. I hate the first option b/c you probably sell low on all of those guys and the roster is stripped bare. If signing AP becomes the best option I think trading Willie becomes the best way to make it happen IF you can get really good value back.
I'm not closed minded to any of these options. Just get all the options on the table and pick the best one. |

Which was always kinda insane to me.
One was a 1st overall pick and the other was 4th. They're only 3 picks apart but their worth is more than that. |

And as naggy as I sound, I’m not opposed to any of them either. I just want to understand the full set of implications going forward. I also hate the idea of trading a really skilled 22 year old. I know it’s to fill an area of need but factor in the age and alternatives to addressing that need.

Totally agree. Other than AA and Max nobody should be eager to move Nylander.
I'd only consider it if there was good value coming back. For me that needs to include a young top 6 fwd on an ELC.

how much does Brodie cost? 6 or 6.5?
Lets say you can get Brodie/Demelo for the same as AP
a right side of
AP
Holl
Dermott (playing rd)
or
Brodie
Holl
Demelo
glad its not my call, but I like the top one better.
I am fine delaying the decision on what to do once Rielly is up for a new contract for 2 seasons to see how the AP effect works.
You can trade Rielly or Willy at that point, sandin may develope enough to replace Rielly |
