Yeah, PT. The Flyers have a lot of fans, and are definitely one of the biggest US franchises, but hockey is still a niche market in the country despite some of us being quite rabid over the game.
Philly doesn’t have NEAR the fan base that Montreal does based on that alone. The Habs are the Yankees, they’re just amidst a slump. Philly certainly has fans spread out across North America because of the bad boys image, kinda like the Raiders, but they’re not the Canadiens.
They’re not even bad boys anymore, for that matter. It’s just that...that...that ORANGE. - Hesh_
Yup. The NHL, unlike the NFl or NBA, say, does have a much higher fraction of its revenue come from paying spectators. But since that is gone this year and possibly next season, Komi actually laid out a reason why calls should favor Canadian teams this year (if Bettman leaned that way), because Canadian tv viewers far outnumber US tv viewers and are the more lucrative source of revenue.

You are the king of conspiracy theories that fail to make even the most rudimentary sense. There are way more Canadian viewers than US viewers, and way more Canadiens viewers than Flyers viewers as the Habs are by far the most popular team in Canada. The TV deals you speak off are tied to viewership, which are tied to advertising. That is why Rogers pays a lot more for its TV deal than NBC does.
So, if Canadian teams are out, viewership in Canada will fall, which will imply that in 5 years time, when Sportsnet goes to negotiate a new deal, after years of flat salary cap, Rogers will tell Bettman it will pay less. How on earth does that make sense? - PT21
The drop off of viewership when Canadian teams are out isn't as drastic. On any given year Canadians will still tune in just because they enjoy hockey that much. A few fans obviously tune out when their team is eliminated but there's a large portion of the population who will still watch because it's NHL playoffs

It does fall. Its only common sense. And people will tune in for less time etc.
That's unrelated. That's due to the poopty product being presented by Sportsnet. Have you watched an intermission? Don Cherry did numbers. Now it's all political and very little hockey related, naturally you will drive your viewers away with that crap
You can believe what you will, I was simply stating I hope gary keeps his slimy little hobbit fingers out of the series. Let the teams settle it, it's better for the league and it's a little thing called integrity. Nobody will be tuning in to see the zebras make an example of Claude like we did on November 7th. It should be a great series!

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I watch hockey for the hockey not to hear some talking head during the intermission. Intermission is when you go to the bathroom and then get another drink. It’s about as informative as sports talk radio.
Keep in mind Habs got rid of Kovy, Scandeezy, Thompson and Cousins at the deadline, severely puts them behind the 8-ball at making a serious playoff run as majority of the teams that knew they would be making the playoffs added at the deadline. Their lineup is depleted but we will ride the young guns, this is crucial experience they need for their development
Habs are playing with house money. True underdogs. Let's keep it rolling baby!

Here is the relevant snippet.
"But ratings slid in the final two rounds as Canadian teams fell by the wayside, according to Numeris audience data. An average audience of 2.39 million for the final round fell 12 percent from the average audience of 2.72 million viewers for the 2014 championship final round."
In 2014, Habs were the only Canadian team to make it to the CF. In 2015, both Flames and Habs were eiiminated one round prior.
Here's the thing though. There's not a fan in the NHL who can't screenshot a game where their team was on the wrong side of bad officiating. Every one of those fans then claims "the NHL is out to screw the (insert team name) again!".
The problem isn't some Gary Bettman agenda here. It's terribly inconsistent, and often times, bad officiating. For me from a Flyers fan perspective, game 1 the Habs were hauling down Flyers players left and right and not getting called. Price delivered a blocker to the jaw of a Flyer who was driven into the net by a Habs d-man, no call.
But I realize I'm watching with orange colored glasses & know that somewhere a few hundred miles north of me there are Habs fans throwing things at their TVs too.
All I know, is it's glorious to have playoff hockey from 11am to 11pm. I'll take the bad calls that go with it.
