Anything out of the top 10 and I grab the best available D, I don't care what side he plays, that D is gonna be pretty horrible in 2 years - obie
Well, on the short term, it really depends if they resign Petry or not. Which they probably will unless they spend all their cap space on a big free agent
They've got an interesting group of prospect at defense with Juulsen, Fleury, Romanov, Struble and Harris. Who knows, maybe Brooks could turn out decently too.

Future doesn't look so dark on defense. - Scabeh
I can see a future in 5 years where the Habs have a committee defense, no 30 minutes a night defensemen but no 12 minuters either.

Even if they re-sign Petry, the decline is coming! Having 2 33+ making top dollars for a long time is a recipe for disaster, especially considering the money being used in net

You know Bergevin has a quota of 3rd pairing veterans to fill. - jugkope
Who knows if he's even there still at that point....
They don't have 1 D under 25 that's pretty much a legit top 4 NHL D or one that has the true potential to be, the closest they have is Romanov but we really don't know... is Romanov gonna be a Markov or an Emelin?

He's looking good but I have a hard time penciling in a guy as a potential top 4 D when he's ever even played North American Hockey, it's not like he was a top prospect or anything! I'm hoping some of these kids turn out but if you're building your future D core on hopes that 3rd and 4th round picks will pan out, you'll find yourself in trouble before too... Weber and Petry won't be the same players in 36 months

Mete
Romanov is going to be a Hamrlik/Spacek player imo. A relatively rugged defenseman that can clear the net and hit along the board, is okay on the transition game, won't run your offense and doesn't have that Weber shot but you might as well put him on the 2nd PP wave.
Weber and Petry were both 2nd round picks.... - fidopro
Oh I know.... I always say lots of really good D come out of the 2nd round, but they all won't, Habs need more, alot more.... one on each side really! A guy like Nurse would be a great add!

Mete, unless involved in a trade at some point should be looked at as the 3rd pairing LD, they need 2 LD better than him, hoping Romanov is 1
what's the point of having a 3rd pairing dman who cannot hit and/or cannot provide offense? - fidopro
Cause he can skate and makes a decent 1st pass to get out, what do you look for in a 3rd pairing really? One that doesn't hurt you and doesn't get you trapped in your own zone for long stretches! His mobility makes him an asset, not one they couldn't live without but I'll take Mete over Benn.... and he's young as hell still!

I would prefer to have Romanov on the 3rd pair and Chiarot on the 2nd.
once Chiarot's contract is over, Romanov will be ready to take his spot on the 2nd pair.
they need a #1 LD. now.

Yea you're talking next year, I'm talking 2-3 years down the road
But on LD a guy that solves both, now and in the future, is Darnell Nurse

2-3 years from now, they would have Romanov on the 2nd pair and one of the kid listed above on the 3rd. they still need a #1 LD. UFA, offersheet, trade.... the sooner the better.

Really? You think that one of Rossi/Perfetti/Holtz will dramatically change the habs? I don’t. The only players at this year draft capables to have an impact on the Habs roster in a near future are Lafrenière, Stutzle (SP?), Sanderson and Drysdale. All 4 will be gone before the 9th pick. I won’t lie in my pool i had the Pens in 3, a prediction that seemed spot on after the exhibition game against the Leafs but truth is, they played well yesterday and despite being roasted in the talent department, they gave an A+ effort last night so i will cheer for them if they keep playing like that.
Oh and Pat, Riverdancers don’t exist...si ça peut te rassurer. - Habsody
