Sure and if Cozens and 2020 first rounder turn into studs then Botts will have surrounded Eichel with the best possible long term core he could.

Perception is in the eye of the beholder.

You don’t have patience, I do.

- Pegullaville

I've pointed out many times that JB did not have patience. His patience was a myth. He spent random poop scattershot. It's an untenable argument to say he was patient and building through the draft when he made 6 selections per draft

The problem is Botterill didn't fully have patience either.

Why can't this year's guy be a contributor in 21-22?
- TheSabresTaco

He can contribute, but the I wouldn't peg him (oh my) to be a "stud" for awhile

He also spent picks and picked up salary to acquire Blow-u, Scandalous and Pominville during his first offseason. The man was a walking contradiction of plans. Never made sense

Long term deals signed by Botterill

Skinner
Eichel

That’s it.

Long term deals acquired or signed by Murray

ROR
Bogosian
Ennis
Moulson
Okposo

First and second round picks traded

Murray

5

Botterill

2

We really need to stop pretending these two were similar, at all.

One was an unmitigated disaster. The other sat on his hands and couldn’t get two good forwards when he needed it

you can't have an owner and a gm sign up for a 4 or 5 year plan, given the murray mess, and change expectations and direction of the team 3 years later

botts sold them on the build from the bottom up philosophy 3 and a half years ago and said it would take 4 or 5 years to compete on a regular basis

they agreed

when 24 teams got in the playoffs instead of 16, terry and kim had a veruca type fit, and changed course

any gm right now for the sabres is a lame duck, as they follow orders from the owners and the owners change the rules right away

murray was told to win now

murray's 2 big assets brought in, botts was told to ship out

I am not defending botts, more miffed by the lack of interviewing people to replace him

Botterill actually traded more picks than Murray

And it's 3 1sts and 2nds for Botterill - Miller, Montour and Skinner, not 2.

I would also argue that Murray got a better return on those 5 than JB did on his 3 - we got two good players and a drunk goalie instead of 1 good player and two unnecessary defensemen

They both sucked ass and they are actually remarkably similar

You’re right, he moved picks for short term stop gaps that didn’t pan out. He did not want to overpay for the big fish

39 said it was best that he was in the middle.

It's the failure of multiple GM's, they each go hand in hand. One tried to rush, while the other just didn't do enough. One threw away pieces like they were chicklets, while the other one added pieces that didn't finish the puzzle. We can throw blame at each cause they both affected the poop show on ice for the last 6yrs.

If you can't get a team into 24th by your third year, you deserve exactly what you get - a firin'

Mid round picks are not the same as picks

21/25/31 in the same draft in year one of a rebuild.

Trading two second rounders + McNcabb for Hudson Fasching is NOT the same as trading mid round picks for Vesey and Frolik

Drafting Karabacek, Cornel, and Lemiuex in the same draft is not the same as picking Davidsson, Bryson and UPL in the same draft.

One was a better GM who way screwed by ROR and the owner, and then absolutely failed to replace him

Yeah, Murray was an idiot. JB also spent 4 third round picks for nothing of value, which makes him an idiot as well. And he drafted 2 low-ceiling defensemen in the 1st and 2nd rounds. He was awful

Pettersson and Barzal jumped right into the show and produced. Keller and Boeser did well also.
Cozens is a very good prospect. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him have a strong year with the extended offseason.

Murray left this team with almost 0 assets and cap.

Botts left Adams a choice of which three top 4 RD he can trade for a forward, the #1 ranked prospect not in the NHL in Cozens, and flexibility with the cap.

They aren’t in the same world.

Both bad GM’s, but Murray is historically bad

Disaster I think is def a little off base. Had the Sabres had Orioles, E. Kane and Lehner this year they would have surely made the playoffs.

Okposo’s deal has been very tough to swallow, but he’s been riddled with injuries that nobody could have seen coming. Maybe that deal (like Moulson) speaks more to building from within and signing ur own (like Reinhart) and trying to avoid the bidding wars of free agency.

Statistically speaking, you should be surprised if he has a strong year (positive impact, 2 way development, 45+ points)

I don't see the point, maybe it's just me, but trading mid round picks to fill spots in your lineup because you have no players available to fill those areas because you have nothing in your system to take those spots. 2 GM's that messed up. One traded everything away, one tried to fill needs with blah players, they both messed up.

Murray's scout convinced Murray to rubber stamp the decision to draft him. Big difference. There are several stories about it.

Like I said above. Murray can be credited for drafting the following useful players in his tenure beyond the 1st 2 picks:

Nylander(useful only because of Joker), Borgen, Asplund, Lemieux, Johansson, Olofsson.

The only impact player on that list was a guy Murray's never heard of.

E.Kane and Skinner are a wash.

Lehner is on his 3rd team since the Sabres.

Botts attempted to replace ROR with Mitts and Cozens. They have another kick at the can this year too.
