Good luck Misha

Only the NHL could come up with a system where a 100+ point playoff lock might end up with a top pick in the draft. It’s truly a Mickey Mouse league!

The LOGICAL solution would have been to have a lottery between the 7 teams with no chance to win the Cup. Picks 8-15 then go to the losers in the play-in round based on lowest to highest points percentage.

Picks 16-23 go the same way to the 1st round losers. 24-27 to the 2nd round losers. 28-29 to the losers in the conf. finals and 30-31 to the finalist and Cup winner.

The other “lottery” teams got their reward when they were allowed to play for the Cup. Last night’s “lottery” was an utter farce and the NHL should be embarrassed!

No team worth a damn would tank a postseason series for a chance to win a 2nd lottery. Also, even a draft pick that turns out to be a home run as an individual player is zero guarantee of substantially greater team success in the long run.
- bmeltzer

Not sure any team would actually tank, but I can see a few who wouldn't be all that unhappy if they lost in the 1st round.

The incentive just shouldn't be there -- that's all I was saying.

Yes I saw this this morning and was confused. Watch it be the pens or oilers.

Read you post 6 times. Didn’t realize the draft lotto was going to be this stupid. And agree. If you have a shot to play for the cup. You should not have a shot at the 1 at overall pick.

They could have just waited.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it all seems fixed. Instead of finding out who won and not caring until draft day, now there's extra buzz and intrigue. That's what the NHL wants, to get people talking about them. Convenient.

How will they decide which play-in team gets the top pick? Another 8-team lotto?

So 16 teams right now have a chance at Lafreniere. Not among the 16 are the 7 worst teams in the League. Embarrassing.

Let's be real... it's really only down to four teams: Pens Oilers Habs Hawks.

Yes, because no team outside the top-10 has ever won a draft lottery.

Would I rather the pens lose to the habs even if you guaranteed that they’d get first overall? Honestly no.

That being said, the fact it even is set up this way is dumb as (frank). It’s forced intrigue that just undermines credibility in a way the nhl does to itself time and time again

I believe if the draft rules had been read in Mickey’s voice instead of Bettman’s, they would have made so much more sense to everyone.

Would make the most sense. Would love to see Phoenix botch it though. The Tanner blogs would be legendary.

What a bad job by league.

Vorobyev....I’d be lying if I actually believe he was gonna become a main stay here. That doesn’t mean I don’t want things to workout for every young kid that comes through. Good luck Misha!

Don't forget Arizona with a chance for the first pick. They do have the lottery pick magnet, Taylor Hall.
