Is it really on hold? Heard the Ruff interview was taking place today.

Look, either the ownership is complete idiots (which seems really unlikely) or there is something else going on. How could anyone not know that they need to MINIMALLY name a GM before a coach. And these are smart people who own other franchises.

I'd guess there is some other motivation to slow this all down.
PROBABLY MONEY...

With the Devils potentially having three first round picks and minimally a very important top 9 pick in this draft it would have been ideal to have this sorted out weeks before the draft. There was plenty of time from when the league suspended play to do so.

That's wonderful because a guy like Ruff won't care if we have a GM or anyone else in place. He'd just be thrilled to be a head coach in the NHL again. A guy like Gallant with options can worry about those things.

Hence we are likely ensuring our screwed up process will get us a worse head coach.

Welcome to Devilville. Or as we use to call it, HELL.

Reminds me of a Gretzky quote - a Mickey mouse organization. Well "reminds" is different than agrees. But from the outside looking in there appears to be no Plan, rather everything is reactionary. That is not good. I believe ownership are very smart people, but smart in the financial world and smart from a team ownership perspective are quite different. Remember the Lou Lams transition, that was not smooth, but much forgotten. The Shero departure was strange at the time and looking worse 6 months later. This team should be focused on the offseason and draft - but without a GM, or head coach, they are going in a death spiral. If we get 3 first round picks, in a quality draft year, I am starting to lose confidence that they will not screw it up.

I think it’s pretty clear that the owners want to talk to GM candidates whose season’s haven’t ended yet. The impatience of the fan base is understandable but if they aren’t 100% sold on Fitz, then we cannot move forward. If it is the President position, same story. We will have to iron out these roles before naming a coach. Other teams aren’t moving forward with coaching changes either, so we aren’t missing out on candidates.

In 1987 I went with my girlfriend to a game against the Oilers on Halloween. She insisted we wear costumes; which I thought was crazy. We get to the arena and there are lots of people in costume... Like a shocking amount.

The Devils end up going up early give up the lead and retake it on the way to a big 6-5 win. Oilers had two late goals to make it look close but most of the third it wasn't. The entire crowd still in costume is standing up and singing the theme from Mickey Mouse Club.

Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?
M-I-C- K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E

And I remember looking around and yelling to my girlfriend "This is completely crazy!" And she said "aren't you glad we dressed up?"

They aren't going to hire anyone because then they would be paying another person. While for right now they only have to pay Fitz and AN. This saves them money, there is no hockey, they do not care about hockey, and will remain the same until there is a glimmer of next season. The owners don't give a (frank) about the Devils, only the Prucenter, which was their motivation for buying the Devils in the first place.

Plain and simple it sucks and has sucked to be a Devils fan for quite some time, plan on it continuing to suck.

The team could be using the lottery results as leverage, as landing a #1-3 pick is a world of difference over #6-9. If they do in fact land a top 3 pick tomorrow night, perhaps a coach (Gallant) would be more inclined to lower his demands. Just speculating of course

Should at least wait till play in round is over. I’m sure there will be some more coaches available before season is over.

Thanks Crusher! It's mostly a nice story because I didn't mention the girl I went with dropped dead at 32. As kids we went to Devils games all the time and if you waited until 5 minutes before the start you could get in ridiculously cheap.

We went to another game where she snagged a puck that popped over the glass. She took it and ran up to the press box because an injured Devil player was sitting there. A minute later she comes down and shows me the puck with a signature on it and says: "Peter Stasny! And your NEVER getting this puck!" Still true 33 years later.

tomorrow's the day. I really don't want to be picking 9th.

IF we pick 3rd, and Laf/By are gone. Do you go Stuetzle? -I do. Do you go Perfetti? Raymond? Drysdale?

And what if we pick 2nd? Byfield? or one of the others?

Give it one day and we will know where we are picking. We can agonize over the selection once we know where it is. Just remember to think "Taylor Hall" during the drawing....

ALSO: How nice is it to pick in a year where there is a definite first overall and no question about it?

what i'd give to win the draft when the 1st overall is projected to be a franchise centerpiece. wouldn't that be nice. Maybe we actually nail this draft, regardless of where we pick.. to makeup for drafting a 3rd line defensive center in Zacha when A-level talent surrounded him in the draft, to makeup for what will likely be a 65pt Bergeron/Zetterberg-lite in Hischier, and who knows what in Hughes.

Our franchise could very well be set for the next 10+ years, IF we score on this draft.

I also have this in mind: Larsson will effectively turn into whoever we pick with the AZ pick, plus Bahl and.. whoever the other player was. Winning the Larsson lottery could've gotten us a franchise player that year, but got us this mess of Hall years,..albeit more money coming to the arena..except when we were atrocious.. but now finally it'll give us a new shot with a young player. Winning the lotto and picking 4th was somewhat of a letdown compared to other lotto winners, but we can't deny that it has been the gift that keeps giving us opportunities. It's hard to believe that was NINE years ago. And now we'll have another shot.. maybe with Sanderson, maybe with Lundell, maybe Rossi falls, or we take Quinn. Maybe we get a franchise player after all.

Very cool story, except the passing part. Hope she's resting in peace.

I remember the early days too. The inaugural season (1982) was my senior year in Sayreville HS. My girlfriend's Dad said he had corporate tickets to see the Devils as he knew I was a hockey fan. (I was an Isles fan). He gave us seats 3rd row behind the net. The face value was $6.00 per ticket. I had so much fun that I went home saying 'who needs to go all the way to Long Island to see hockey, when I got the Devils in my back yard?' Been a fan ever since....although girlfriend is no longer in the picture. Side note: it was tough however giving up a 3 time Cup champ (at the time) for a cellar dweller, but NO regrets.

I think the early days is what makes me love the red/green uni's. Wish they'd go back to them full time!

The hockey, the fans and atmosphere were so different back then. I remember my first playoff game vs. Islanders when we finally made it and there were fights in the concourse between Devil and Islander fans. Not saying a lot but it was just crazy at times.

The thing is we had been very bad but you knew everyone was trying to win. Trying to get better; and it was harder to improve because of limited player movement. Now we are bad and an organizational mess.
