IF they resign K-Palms he should be the team captain. No doubt.
As for the draft and goaltending, I don't exactly agree with Todd.
Blackwood might be fine now but there is no quality depth in the organization and this has repeatedly hurt the Devils. I'm not saying go after Askarov but we need some kind of contingency. IF we assume we are parting ways with Schneider then maybe getting a NHL quality backup is enough for now.
That said, we should try to add a quality goalie in this draft. There are a couple of well regarded players. The problem is once we get out of the 1st round we are out of business until the 4th round... |

We could pick #1,2, & 3 with a lottery win or # 6,7,8 or 9 if we don't win the lottery.
Side note... also praying we can sign Goose. Would hate to see him become our next 'forced to sell at the deadline' player. |

Yep and im fine being in any of those spots except for 9. Anything in the top 8 and im happy with, which im fully expecting to slide atleast 1 spot |

I like the rankings at 1/2/3. I don't think we need Byfield b/c we are filled to brim with centers. If we land at 3, Could get very interesting if we looked to trade down.
Did something happen with Askarov? Tankathon has him down around pick 20 when he was a fringe top 10 for months. |

He was ranked 11, so just outside the top 10. Some people were turned off by his WJC performance and dropped him but i dont take too much stock into it, as dont most rankers(whoever dropped him is dumb). He played as an under-ager, which rarely ever happens for a goalie(especially for Russia). He has too much of a great resume behind him before that to have 1 tournament make him drop, which the NHL scouts have clearly acknowledged by still having him at 11 |

A LOT OF NICE CHOICES FOR US AT #6! |

To add onto this. 5/10 scouts had Stutzle at 2, and the other 5/10 had Byfield. The reason Byfield is 3 is because a couple of the scouts had Byfield outside of their top 5 whereas nobody had Stutzle lower than 3. So that was the "tiebreaker" |

Getting pushed all the way back to 9 is unlikely but even if it happens we just have to hope someone picking 1 thru 8 does something unexpected; like maybe take Askarov early. You never know how these things play out, but at least we will know where our pick ends up on Friday. |

Yeah exactly you gotta figure atleast one of the top 5 teams win a top 3 pick, it'd be extremely unlucky for us to move down 3 slots from where we're at lol. It'll just be nice to know for sure where our pick is so we can start diving into and talking about prospects that'll be in our range. No point in talking about Holtz/Rossi/ect if we end up moving into the top 3 and no point in talking about Stutzle/Byfield or even Drysdale if we drop down. So it'll just be nice to know for sure |

There's a chance we drop a spot or 2, but also a chance the AZ pick ends up 8th! If Arizona loses in the qualifying round and does not win a top-three pick in the Lottery, the Devils can land between slots 8-13.
Imagine having 1st, 8th and 17th lol. You land the first franchise player you've had since Parise, if you consider him that. Then you land either Sanderson, who could be a mid-pair 2-way dman, or take a Rossi or Holtz who could ALSO potentially be a franchise guy. You could essentially land Selanne and Kariya or Hossa in the same draft.. since idk who really to compare these players to lol.
I think we should go with forward over Sanderson. I can't tell if he's overhyped as bust-proof, or underhyped and he could actually potentially be a #2 on a team. I read he's peaked now, verses he can still improve.
Meanwhile you have small Rossi that just tore it up this year, or even looking at Quinn. Idk. |

I really hope we can bring Goose back. He was one of the few bright spots of the season and actually made the games watchable win or lose. |

With all the garbage going on with this franchise, I have to say that I admire your optimism. I don't share it, but I admire it. |

If we get #6, #10 and #17 and do not screw them up, things will look real promising. |

I feel like it's so hard to screw up 6 and 10.. but I can't help but being leery. I'm an Eagles fan, and if you follow football, you know what I'm talking about. |

Things looked promising when we landed Taylor Hall.
Things looked promising when we won the lottery and drafted Nico.
Things looked promising when Bratt burst onto the scene out of camp.
Things looked promising when Ty Smith fell to us in the draft.
Things looked promising when we traded for MoJo.
Things looked promising when we won the lottery AGAIN and drafted Jack.
Things looked promising when we traded so little for PK Subban.
Things looked promising when we traded for Goose.
..... BUT WE STILL STINK!
So yeah, it'll be great if we drafting around# 6, 10, and 17 BUT....
I feel like we are going to continue to struggle.
I'm so tired of it. |

Byfield is one of the weirdest prospects. I've never witnessed someone with such a great stat sheet be so underwhelming when you watch him.

Well... you never know next year. Nico, Goose, Bratt, Hughes.. I feel like every forward should be +10 points next year, and I'm not even exaggerating. The combination of better coaching, development, chemistry.. can't possibly lead to equal or worse results. So there IS reason to be optimistic. Add what should be an NHL talent around 6th overall, maybe 8-11th too. Definitely reason to be optimistic. AND Blackwood arrived last year, so hopefully he comes in with a solid game.
Defense will hinge on adding an actual.. please hockey gods.. an actual solid NHL dman. If we can add that piece.. I think we'll be ok. Smith will be here, but he'll make rookie mistakes. Subban will be a liability again. Sami and Greene are gone. Severson NEEDS to be consistently good. None of the D need to be world-beaters, just play at least average defense.
Dillon-Severson
Butcher-Subban
Smith-Carrick
Don't get me wrong, this is still not a good defense. We essentially replace Vatanen with Dillion, and Greene with Smith. Subban will continue to slow. Maybe Butcher and Carrick can be ok. If we don't add a decent DEFENSEman? Good luck lol. The season will be lost before it began, regardless of the development of the forwards. We would be picking top 10 again.
BUT.. if we land a Gruhl/Schneider, that will help the situation 2021-22. If we draft one of them AND Drysdale or Sanderson we'd be in even better shape.
In conclusion- I expect development at forward. If we add a Dillon, then the defense won't necessarily be worse than last year. So, we SHOULD be a little better next season. If the offense can look like a NHL offense consistently, that'll be an exciting season and reason to feel optimism, even if we miss the playoffs.

MartysBetter88 makes some good points but I am hopeful a new coaching regime will help. Nas had the team doing better but he was the D behind Hynes so I don’t think it changed as much as the offensive. So yeah I have to agree with you the head coach selection could be a legit boost; unless we screw that up too. |

well yes, that's why I said, "The combination of better coaching, development, chemistry.. can't possibly lead to equal or worse results". It's going to be the trifecta. That's why I'm showing a little optimism. |

Taylor Hall was our last Franchise Players except he didn't really like this franchise... |
