I'm trying not to get too crazy about this until it happens....

That said, wouldn't it be just like the Devils to have an exhaustive search to hire a guy they could have hired on January 7th? I mean Nashville managed to replace their coach in 1 day... 5 months later rumors are swirling in Newark.

And of course it won't be Gallant, just like we re-upped Hynes instead of taking a run at Vigneault or Quenneville.

I'm all for Lavy if it means we dont go with Nas, and there were certainly other worse options out there, like John Stevens as well. He's not my top choice at all but i wont be upset if we go with him. Gallant/BB would be great but people need to realize that a coach also needs to want to come coach here

Some Pastrami from Hobby's Deli and a lap dance from Erika Wachter should seal the deal on anyone we want to hire. Why focus on the negative of a team in utter disarray in beautiful Newark, New Jersey with the leagues smallest payroll?

Honestly Lavi would be a great fit there. With the young talent the team has, in sure he could help with the rebuild and seemed to have a great relationship with players in Nash and even Philly

When it comes to the offense i don't really care about what the analytics say about Lavy. Does his style wear out? Sure, but his teams fill the net. In his last 3 coaching stops, Carolina was 8th in goals scored per game, Flyers were 5th in goals scored per game, and the Preds were 8th in goals scored per game. I don't love him but i'll be fine with this hiring. This team has way more issues with the actual talent on this roster alone than any coach will completely fix. We need everything besides a starting goalie, i believe Mac is the guy. Our D is arguably the worst group we have ever put onto the ice since the '88 team made the playoffs. This upcoming draft from Fitz or whoever is the GM is WAY more important for the future of this franchise than the hiring of our next coach.

As a Flyers fan, I find myself hoping the Devils won't hire Lavy because I think it would make them better. Maybe not immediately, but it would be one less thing holding the Devils back from becoming a better team. Is he a perfect coach? No - even if there is such a thing - but the man gets results, even if he appears to have a shelf-life, i.e. win-by date.

Our team is such a mess it would be nice not to have to worry about if we are being coached reasonably well. And while you never know exactly how a coach and an organization will fit it's reasonable to think Laviolette can do a good job here.

I always think of Torts. Wins a cup with Tampa and then does a really good job in New York. LOSES HIS (frank)ING MIND in Vancouver and seems like the game and world has passed him by; but somehow gets a job in Columbus and has done surprisingly well. Just hope we aren't Lavy's Vancouver.

I just want the relief that we won't be bumped more than 1 spot down. Craving playoff hockey man. I want to know what happens with our pick. It's nice having a reason to watch other than for pure entertainment.

Yes, yes it will. And watch one or two of the 8-15 teams win and wait for it....it willbe either Pitts, Tor or Edm winning #1. The NHL will become a laughingstock of a league.

We will find out what happens with our original pick but I think the Arizona and Vancouver picks aren't going to get resolved.

Todd, is there a database where I can look at that Lavy coaching chart you have? I just struggle to imagine how Lavy has a negative impact on offense when in his 11 full seasons since the lockout he has finished below average in goals once and has placed inside the top 10 6 times. In terms of shot generation he has finished outside the top 10 only twice. I know that your chart only looked at 5v5 situations, but the guy seems remarkably consistent offensively.

Hell, even if you isolate 5v5 he seems to do well. From 2014-15 to 2018-19 (his full seasons in Nashville) he's 5th in 5v5 corsi %, 4th in shot attempts, and 8th in 5v5 goals.

What I imagine is that his teams are incredibly efficient in shot suppression but play low event in general. So the corsi numbers look good because his teams are always coming out ahead, but they aren't necessarily generating high danger chances (a stat that's come along in the past few seasons).

I'm afraid with Lavy as coach is that he's coached teams with good defensive cores where that is definitely a big weakness for this roster. So a good defensive system in place will probably help us from getting blown out so often but doesn't really play to the strengths of the team which should theoretically be team speed transitional style of play.

In terms of total 5v5 shot attempts Nashville was 8th (got that wrong earlier, 4th in differential) during his tenure (again, only counting full seasons he was there). They were 8th in 5v5 goals. So they aren't low event and seem to generate goals at a pretty standard rate.

I would buy the "lucky" explanation if it weren't such a large sample size or it wasn't a coach who finishes above average in scoring more than 90% of the time.

Lav has had very solid teams on D and F to work with. We're an AHL team in comparison to those. He's going to get so frustrated and start yelling about jam. I just hope he is able to teach these kids how to NHL. I don't expect a playoff run, but the team needs to develop.

Who is this development guru we're going to hire? I thought most people wanted an established coach who could start being accountable for results? Right now it seems like the former USNDP, College and AHL coach who preaches a fast, attacking, and supportive system would be the first choice
