What if Seabrook is still on LTIR and not medically cleared to play during the buy out window. Can he still be bought out? Same holds for Shaw. So if these two can't be bought out for this reason, who's next in line?
What the leafs could do would be to leverage their financial clout. Take a huge contract from a team that needs to get rid of two and buy it out, with the cost of a nice draft pick or prospect as a sweetener for doing so.

I’ve said it before about Rocky, and I’ll say it again about othe owners: don’t be so sure that some of these expensive contracts with lots of term left - Seabrook, Kessler, Okposo, Lucic, Wenberg, Benn, Neal, Bobrovsky, Parise - will be bought out.
On top of dramatic losses for this lost season, owners aren’t likely to be throwing millions of dollars at players who won’t be playing for them - and then spend up to the new cap.

Yeah and the Leafs don't have a contract to buy-out.
"I'm not sure what to do here because the Leafs are in such a mess. "
This has to be a joke, no? They are one of so few teams without a bad contract needing to be bought-out. Kerfoot can be moved easily,. They aren't buying him out.
It's ironic he says that when most team have a Skinner, Bobrovsky, Hayes contract
What a "Mess" a team with a signed core of Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Nylander/Rielly/Muzzin is.

Yes the Leafs, not a bad contract or a good defenseman in the lot . And a Goalie that is allergic to game 7 .They should buy out Tavares, biggest mistake they made .His money would look good on a couple D men right now. .But who are we to tell the center of the universe Leaf fans how to win. HAWKS only owned them this year

Yes, Morgan Rielly and his 72 points and 5th in Norris voting is crap.
Tavares is A #1 c. PPG this year and 47 goals, 88 points last year. He's never getting bought-out.
You might notice the guys named to be bought out are crap.
Leafs were 6th in NHL once Keefe came in with both Rielly and Muzzin out. Try to be realistic.,
What D do they sign with 11 million. Please tell me. And where do Dermott, Sandin Lilljegren play with Rielly/Muzzin+2 new D play.

IMO a championship caliber roster can NEVER exist with a 1D that only plays offense. Reilly is a sensational offensive talent, but he’s so bad in his own end(compared to most 1Ds in a vacuum) that it doesn’t matter. You can list all the stats you want, won’t matter. Leafs need a true 1D.
The Tavares signing was idiotic too. Team already had a franchise caliber 1C and 2C(Kadri at the time), and overall had plenty of forward depth/firepower. Why they didn’t spend that Tavares $ on a defenseman instead is beyond me. And that was the turning point in the trajectory of this current era of Leafs hockey. All downhill ever since. A shame they blamed Babcock and made him the scapegoat.

Teams are winning cups with 2 #1 cs. Kadri is regressing and is not nearly as good.
And Rielly is far from just offense. You are wrong. His career is better than Keith's was at the same age.
What DMan do they sign instead of Tavares? There's none!
Boston
Carolina
Dallas
Philadelphia
Toronto
Washington
Winnipeg

Could probably be traded for varying returns especially if they are willing to retain salary on some of the larger contracts.
Although I would highly consider a different approach to tackling this if I were the league. A lot of contracts signed in the last 3/4 years have been built with lockout protection if that were to happen next season. This means that most players actual salary is relatively low in comparison to their cap hit. What I recommend the league do would be lower cap hits of existing contracts by a percentage of that difference for this season only. This will allow the league to lower the salary cap temporarily before Seattle expansion and the nhl’s tv deal kicks in as those were expected to cause the cap to sky rocket in the 21/22 season. Mind you this is under the assumption we get a full 20/21 season.

Just a observation .25th in GGA .Their a lot more to Defense then scoring got to stop a few . Hang on to Tavares( you will soon be stuck with him) and his zero rings , the best news I heard . You will be watching BW cup celebration's for along time
Toronto and Washington surely won't be buying out Kerfoot or Jensen, and probably won't be buying out anyone.
Ottawa won't be buying out Bobby Ryan. He's well liked in the locker room, is a good veteran, and they still have to reach the cap floor somehow. Anyway they're so tight on actual dollars, they likely won't be buying out anyone since it would mean paying double salary for a single roster spot.
Jack Johnson is Crosby's best buddy and actual didn't play that bad this year. Hornqvist will be the one to go.
Dustin Brown or Jeff Carter will be going before Quick.
There's not a single chance Florida buys out Bobrovsky as it would be a fireable admission of failure for Tallon. Look towards the defense.
Krejci won't be bought out, he likely will resign for 2 more years at around 2 million per and slot in that 3C spot (with Coyle on the wing) until he retires. If they wanna absolutely get rid of him, someone will pay a mid round pick to get some center depth.
Finally, Columbus will never compliance buyout Wennberg as a regular buyout would cost less than a million per on the cap for 6 years (actually less than 500K for the first three years) since he's 25 years old. It would be a serious waste of a compliance buyout. Look for them to leverage this to get a high draft pick or a prospect from a team who has more than 1 deadweight to shed (Chicago, Vancouver, St Louis, San Jose, Edmonton, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Buffalo, Minnesota, Islanders, Rangers).
Why Why Why? NHL General Managers and their owners never learn. It is time to start Managing the Cap, not just giving money away, it's not candy or the deposit on a bottle of beer. All a buyout does is give GM's another do over. It is time for players to realize that the goose is cooked and that getting a pay increase is because you earned it. So some players will actually have to take a pay cut on their next contract because they were overpaid. A prime example is Saad, he turned a situation into a great contract for him, but there is no way he should be getting a raise in 2021.
I have one suggestion to all sports leagues and that is go the different levels of Government and negotiate an Athlete's tax profile to put all teams on equal footing, Tampa Bay is an example of a team that has benefited from good scouting and better tax laws.
Yzerman might theoretically choose Nielsen, but I'd choose Abdelkader. One goal in his last 90 games. Just 15 even strength goals in his last 259 games.
Can't score, can't defend, probably already worse than anybody on the Griffins' top two lines and signed through 2023 (i.e., one year longer than Nielsen.)
Nielsen's contract is awful but Abdelkader's is cataclysmic.
