I'm OK with it. Losing Foote is a bummer, but Foote is a late first-round pick and Coleman is a Top-6 guy on most teams. If your late first-rounder develops into a legit Top-6 guy, then most GM's would consider that a good pick. We basically just swapped a prospect with a Top-6 ceiling for a guy who is currently a Top-6. Long term, this trade could be less attractive for the Bolts, depending on what happens. Coleman has one more bargain year on his contract, then he will be due for a hefty raise (assuming his time in Tampa goes well). Foote would still be a cheaper option at that point, so this trade is about timing. And Tampa wants to win NOW - that is abundantly clear.

I like what Coleman brings. He's an upgrade over most of our bottom-six guys, which is likely where he will slot in, along with some special teams time. The Lightning are a tougher and grittier bunch this year and Coleman brings more sandpaper. I like it. Not big on the price just yet, but that's how the market goes at the deadline. The Avs and Bruins were also in on Coleman, so the price went up.

I like the trade. They are in win now mode for this year and next and his contract also allows them to get thru this cap crunch still competitive going forward. Giving up Foote and a First is a lot, Foote is a few years away in my opinion as is skating needs improvement. As we have seen with the Lightning so far first round picks don't mean everything. Vasy and Cal Foote are the only 1st round picks left on the team from the past 9 drafts.

I also think they should put Coleman on the RW of Cirelli.

Stamkos-Point-Kucherov (nuclear line outscoring oppoents 2-1)
Palat-Cirelli-Coleman (shut down line with plenty of secondary scoring)
Killorn-Johnson-Gourde (name a better third line in the NHL)
Maroon-Paquette-Stephens (very good fourth line)

The most interesting thing about this trade is it made all three lines (2-3-4) better.

it seems like a great trade for both teams.

tampa got what they need for RIGHT NOW, that's to say, a cost controlled player, signed to a great contract, who can play anywhere in their lineup.

NJ got exactly what they need for the FUTURE - another 1st rd pick, and a really good prospect

works great for both teams. maybe a bit of a steep price to pay for Tampa, but that's the nature of the TDL. Ottawa is on the verge of potentially getting a 1st rd pick for a 3rd line center.........TDL is a wonderful time of year.

...but his performance this year has been elite. He only has 30 points...

That is not elite

If the Pens made this trade you'd say they gave up too much.

Not true. I never said they gave up too much, I only said that zucker wasn’t a top line player, like tanner claimed.

Don't like it for Tampa.

On the other hand that pick is going to be a very late first.

I think Tampa underpaid dramatically for Coleman. On pace for about a 30 goal season as a power forward and a strong two way player. A $1.8million cap hit, a monthish and two bites at the playoffs and a full season and you get two late round first round picks for that? So one of the picks was already made. People think Krieder being a rental is of more value and the percentages suggest that is unlikely. He's still playing for a big pay day, that doesn't scream putting the team first. He won't look at the trade as home as much as Coleman will.

Krieder has more impact on the game overall but he's a rental. That means assets that are long term are gone for a short term asset. It's more of a gamble. How many impact players give value for the assets received on an expiring contract for a month and a half and the play offs?

Exactly. Though how conditional picks weren't at least attached is a mind blower.

I think it's a great trade for both teams. You should also factor into all this that Coleman will have trade value next year if you want to flip him. The very reasonable contract makes him an easy fit on any roster.

So Tanner says Benning got fleeced for trading a first for JT Miller yet Tampa hit a massive home run for trading that same pick plus a prospect for a player who has poorer stats than Miller.

You beat me to this take on Tanner...
For whatever reason, he dislikes the Canucks and Jim Benning. JB did great in the Miller deal (Gms 59 G 22 A 35 P 57) Was it questioned and maligned when it went down? Yes it was. But it has given the Canucks exactly what they needed and has proven to be a home run on a cost controlled (26 yr old, 3 more years @ 5.25m) first line winger. That was for a first (same one in the Coleman deal) and a 3rd. Nothing against TB or Coleman, but which one seems like the deal again?

You think Vancouver is winning a couple rounds and going deep?

No, they are in different situations. TB is win now, and Van is building.
I think the Canucks can get in and win a round, depending on who they play and luck.
But my earlier point was how Tanner drove the Miller trade into the ground as a terrible deal for the Canucks based on their building timeline. However it turned into the deal and the player that they totally needed to help in that build.
Like I said before, nothing against TB or Coleman, but they paid a huge price IMO.
Maybe Miller couldn't fit properly with TB for whatever reason.
Hindsight here... But inside of 8 months,
Miller, Foote and a 1st
for
Coleman and a 3rd
OUCH!
If they win the Cup... nobody cares

It's not Tampa's first, it's Vancouver. It's also protected. As a devils fan, I want Vancouver to miss the playoffs this year, they keep the 2020 1st and the devils get a non-protected 1st in 2021. Then at that point, us devils fans pray for the Canucks to suck in 2021
