I think he's better than Maatta and fits the Pens system better mainly due to his skating ability.

I think he has a better offense pulse than Dumo but it isnt as efficient defensively.

Totally fine with this signing.

The cap has also gone up since the Maatta extension kicked in. Maatta accounted for 5.5% of the team's cap hit his first year. Even if the cap remains stagnant, Pettersson's will account for less than 5%. For contending teams where every cent counts, that a noticeable difference.

Plus he basically gave the Pens a 'free year' this year... All seems fair to me

Another great point haha. 870k for a top 4 mainstay...steal of a deal.

The 2nd pairing is a 2 mill cap hit this season haha.

Back to last blog, if Murray would take 5 then hell yea. But I doubt it. And also Jarry seems like a good goalie yea his stats have dropped a bit but I didn't think he'd stay at that place. He handles the puck extremely well too, helps out that defense.

Let's put this into a little perspective...

- The expectations of Maatta were far different than that of Pettersson.

- Different time-frame means different market values and at the time Maatta was MAYBE higher than that of a #4 dman because of what they expected him to be.

- $4M now is about what you're looking at for a solid 2nd pairing dman which has he proven to be thus far.

- Pettersson is not going to set the world on fire. He's not going to be a PP QB and he's not going to net you 40 to 50 points. He's solid all-around dman.

Based on how he's played this season I expected between $3.5 to $4M, so I think it's fine. I also think this means Schultz is definitely a goner and possibly JJ.

Do you think Jarry is capable of playing 50+ games/year and winning you a Stanley Cup/Cups? What's your confidence level that there would be no drop in production?

Schultz will definitely be gone as he will want more money than Pens will be willing to pay. Not sure about JJ. His game is better this year and for the money, he seems like a good investment since he can play up and down the lineup if needed. Unless GMJR can find another Marino, JJ will be back. Don’t see anyone at WBS ready to take his minutes next year either.

Yes, I don't think there will be a drop in production. And I know it's not the NHL but he's won a championship with the oil kings and gold medal in WHL. So he knows what it takes to win something.

It's been pointed out that if you take Petterson's discount deal this year into consideration it's basically a 6 year deal at $3.5mil.

Yea that's one way of looking at it. Honestly his low hit this year helped a ton. Rust could be gone if he had a substantial deal.

But he already saw a drop in production this month. He only had a .902 save % this month.

I think this Petts signing really pushes the JJ gotta go narrative back up a bit more again hahah

Yea from that .902 save I think is his low end. You maybe missed the convo from last thread but I did say I didn't expect his ridiculous numbers to stay but he has that potential to go on runs like that. However obviously I could be wrong and we have time to see if Jarry can bump it back up a little.

I wouldn’t say jarry was starting to falter. The whole team was gassed, jj is on the first pairing and letang was making some of his worst decision making recently.

Schultz should definitely not be resigned. Not sure what would be ideal for 3-RD. Maybe take a chance on a 1 year FA then hope Addison and Poj can supplant both 3rd pairing rolls in 2022.

I think Rikky-Rudy > JJ-Schultz.... especially when factoring in the 7 or 8 mill cap hit difference.

Maybe after the season for sure. I don't see it happening during the year. So I asked in the last thread to the whole group. Does this mean possibly we just go after a rental now? Or can we still go with someone with term? If they keep both Murray/Jarry it concerns me a bit.

I agree he has the pedigree, but a full 82-game grind the NHL is different than a WHL championship. And what medal does the WHL hand out?

I'm not saying he's bad, just that it's a small sample size.

Absolutely. But they won't stick with those two as the bottom pair next year. They will try and snag some vet or something IF JJ is gone.

With Marino and Pettersson being established as your 2nd pairing, is Addison most likely to be moved? He was lights out with Canada at the worlds. Their defensive core is still relatively young. Letang 32, dumo 28, Pettersson 23, and Marino 22. If these players stay consistent, that’s a solid core for the next 5 years.

I really hope that every time Rutherford agrees to let one of his assistants interview/take a new position....he tells them that they owe him one favor. Obviously something within reason. For instance, say Guerin has two similiar offers for Zucker between the Pens and some random team... he'd pick the pens.

And on that note... time to see what favor ol' Tommy Fitzgerald can help out JR with...cough... Blake Coleman... cough
