Jan-
Respectfully disagree with your conclusion about the defensive system tonite.
First goal, Fast screwed everyone with that awful, no-look drop pass. Entire team was expecting him to go deep and he turned it over unexpectedly leading to a scramble to get back. Resulting goal was unfortunate but 100% on Fast.
Second goal, Strome made a terribly timed line change leading to odd man rush. Both veteran forwards that made brutal and uncharacteristic mistakes. As much as I beat up on Lindy Ruff and his defensive coaching --- neither goal was on the defense tonite.
Not to make excuses, but several Rangers looked weak and slow besides Buch. I thought Panarin and Strome looked "off" and I wonder if the flu is still working its way through the team.
In any case, just an awful loss. Hopefully we go into the break with a sweep of the Fishsticks on Tuesday!

Tommy, I pointed out in the blog Fast’s turnover and Strome’s bad change. Both most certainly contributed mightily to the goals against, but the system did play a factor because the D kept backing up and backing up, no challenging the forwards.
You could argue on the second, they had no choice because Columbus had a 3-on-2. But even on that play, the D retreated and especially on the first goal. Trouba backed up when Bjorkstrand got the puck, creating the screen and time he had.
But I get your view. Just a bad loss that shouldn’t have happened. |

With the way the point system is, in a tie game with less than 5 minutes left Rangers really need to start playing for at least OT. This isn't the first time they have blown a game in the last minute. This falls on the coaching staff. They need to adjust. |

To a certain extent but why the heck was Strome going off for a change there. |

Yea I agree that was a bad change. But why were all 3 forwards caught in the offensive zone with 30 seconds left? That just can't happen. |

Don't think you can pin point it to one thing.
Bad change, defense not being aggressive, passing up tons of shooting chances in the 1st 2 periods. Shesty should have had that 2nd goal.... bunch of things happened in that game |

Yea I know that wasn't the sole reason they lost. But I am saying this isn't the first time they have blown a lead in the last minute. Why they need to change their strategy in the last few minutes of a tie game. Points are too important to throw away like that. |

The problem with the D backing up is you really can't have Trouba or Skjei playing too aggressive, both have horrible speed backwards. We have seen both get beat too easily at the blue line.
Yeah that line was way to aggressive with a minute left and Strome's ill advised change. I still think Shesty should have had that last goal though. Just a bad combo of things. |

Yea I just wish they would get to center ice and dump it in at that point of the game. Can send one guy in to forchek, just don't get beat. An OT win is worth the same as a regulation win. No need to be overly aggressive like they are for some reason. |

Beating a dead horse here but I cannot come up with one reason, a good reason, for Hank to see the net. The future is here. I really wish he’d make the call that this team needs right now.
Georgie needs to stay in Ranger blue. He or Igor should be in nets nightly.
Henrik Lundqvist is one of my favorite Rangers all time. Absolutely love the guy. When we talk about “great Rangers”, Hank is the epitome of that conversation. I don’t forget what he’s done here and the career he’s had. Too many big games from him to name.
But, sadly, it’s time. |

Hank isnt the problem, its his cap hit. Unless he retires, which I doubt he will, he isnt going anywhere. |

Exactly my point
Looking for a “good” reason. His cap hit is not one. And it’s not like he’s played bad either. It’s just that the net belongs to these two other guys |

Hank's cap hit is actually irrelevant. It could be a problem, but we can't even get to that stage due to the true problems, his NMC and refusal to waive it. Not that he didn't earn that clause, or the right to hang on to it. But, so long as that remains the case, how much another team would have to wiggle to fit him in is moot. |

Your blog and your comments here shows a lack of understanding of hockey systems. Playing defense and when to back in and when to challenge aggressively is a read and react situation. On both goals, if the defenseman had stepped up aggressively at the blueline maybe he breaks up the play but that is a risky play with the situations. On both goals one pass with the defenseman stepping up aggressively would've resulted in a player in all alone on the goalie or a two on one. There is no such thing as a defensive system that requires defenseman to step up on every rush.
This is likely an opinion derived from an analytics mindset off of manually tracked zone entries. Leads to a lot of misunderstandings. |

OMG! Will y'all leave Jan out of this! Its a blog with someones version of an awful ending. One that was created by the entire team, including coaching. The fact that everyone is still lining for hank to retire, waive his NMC and go away is just the most insane topics! HE'S NOT LEAVING! HE WOULD HAVE LEFT ALREADY IF HE WANTED TO GO! THIS IS HIS AND HIS FAMILIES HOME AND ALWASY WILL BE! SO STOP WITH THIS S#$%!
Also, this team is not making the playoffs, whether they won last night or not. Too many teams to climb and this team is still learning to play together, as a team, as a line, and as individuals. There needs to be some changes and that will happen in 5 weeks. Im not happy that Kreider will be gone. Not happy theres no money to sign everyone but thats just the way it is. I'd like to see a little more urgency in motivating the young guns, Chytil, Kappo, Howden, soon Kravitsov and start pressing more! Maybe move them around a little more to play with some more talented players. Maybe Chytil centering Panarin and Kappo. Just to see what could be.
Now unless someone in this blog has the ear of Jeff Gorton and JD, they're going to trade who they seem fit to trade. They don't read this site or any other and honestly dont give a S#$% what we all think. Just enjoy the game. |
