Ben Shelley: Piero Greco deserves credit for New York's success in net
- Ben Shelley

All the credit to Greco and Mitch Korn as well who is also part of the coaching tandem we have for goaltenders but this statement is a bit off;

“But remember, the Islanders weren’t a playoff team pre-Greco“

Maybe the season before with Weight who no matter who our goalie coach was and who was in net their numbers were not going to be good due to our complete disregard for defense. Two years prior Greiss pretty much won us the series(JT was also dominant) against the Panthers. He was incredible. I’m not saying Greco and Korn has not had a positive effect on our goaltending but I am saying Greiss has been holding his own for some time with a pour push defense before Greco was here. He deserves some credit he’s a pretty good tender...

Sure.

1. Gusev played exactly zero games for Vegas. He plays for a terrible Devils team.
Also, Vegas isn't particularly good this year, but that's irrelevant

2. In a vacuum, of course I'd prefer Hall over Gusev and it's not close. But Hall is going to cost an absolute fortune. Do you want to pay a 1st + high-end prospect, and maybe more, for him and risk losing him to UFA?

3. Assuming they signed him, not only is he going to cost a fortune to acquire, but then you have to factor in the salary cap. Are you prepared to pay 2020 1st+Dobson or Wahlstrom+another piece+at least one of Pulock or Toews? Because you're not signing Barzal for ~$10M, Hall for ~$10M, Pulock for somewhere around $6-7M and Toews for somewhere around $3-4M. It's flat-out impossible.

4. He's 28 now, I'm a little leery about signing an injury-prone player, that will be 29 when his 8 year contract starts, to a deal that carries that kind of cap hit

5. I don't like guys with horse teeth. (frank) him, Couture, and Gary Dell'abate.

I’m all about Hall as a rental but I’m assuming the Devils will be pushing for a trade with him signing due to that upping his value significantly. With that said not sure how much we’d have to give up for the rental version if it were an option? I’d be willing to cough up a first and one of our defensive prospects in the bridge. Not sure that’ll get it done though.

His cost would probably be similar to that of Pacioretty, unless he makes it known that he won’t sign.

I'm just carrying over this from the last thread:

So devils trade Larson 1 for 1 to land hall and now want a 1st a top prospect plus? I'm sure they will ask for it but I cant see paying that without a deal in place to keep him
- Upstate_isles

I don't think what they gave up for Hall (or any years-prior trade, in general) is really going to dictate the outcome. Since they've acquired him he's won a Hart Trophy and played really, really well. Far worse players have gone for more than (I think) you're suggesting they'd get for him.

Even if it's not a "top" prospect, you're still probably looking at them asking for someone like maybe Holmstrom or Wilde, a first this year, and another piece. Stone went for a 2nd, Brannstrom (who was widely regarded as one of the best defensive prospects in the league at the time) and Oscar Lindberg. So if you figure the Isles aren't moving Dobson, who is more or less of the same caliber, then it's probably a first round pick, maybe Holmstrom or Wilde, and...Dal Colle? Koivula? Mayfield?

It's not that I even think that asking price is unfair, but I just think signing an injury prone 29yo to an 8 year deal might not be the best decision.

Doesn’t Komarov usually play well against Montreal?

Especially when you remember the identity of the individual who initiated said trade.

Hall did win the hart but stone is a much more complete player in my opinion, scores passes and is great defensively. The way the CBS is set up though all you're ufas are 28 29 so everyone will regret the last 3 or 4 years on the bigger deals other than ladd, then it was every year

I think he's shown he's not as effective playing in the middle as he is on the wing. Not a travesty of a decision given the fact that Koivula played like 4 minutes last night

Komarov and play well are two things that don’t normally mesh well together.

Don’t disagree with not throwing Bailey in as the third line center. That wasn’t pretty.

Yeah and Stone also doesn't have any seasons where he was scoring even remotely close to above a PPG and Hall has several. I don't disagree with you, I prefer Stone as well, but it's hard to ignore the fact that Hall has posted some elite-level offensive numbers.

Feels like every time we’re in Montreal we have to sit through one of these stupid, (frank)ing things.

Kirk Meuller just to make this thing worse🤮🤮🤮🤮

I feel like every game they play they have a pregame ceremony. They probably do thinking it’ll get the home team going. There’s one for niteislander 😂

I got home late and thought I was going to be on DVR delay - nope. That was 20 minutes long.
