Letang -2, Marino -3, JJ +1

Even in the loss... similar to against VGK... I like the energy. All the pucks that were going in the net the past couple weeks are finding a way to stay out now. It happens.

I may be spouting a completely incorrect, unsubstantiated opinion, but hasn't JJ generally looked better (including having better possession numbers) when he's been paired with Gudbranson?

I think he’s looked much better period, the big time writers like Ryan Wilson and Hooks Orpik go overtime in trying to find fault in him every shift. He’s not perfect, but who is. The coach even ran him out on the second PP unit and he did no worse than the golden boys. You see only what you want to see.

The flukey first goal was scored by Acciari. Denis (Geno?) Malgin's goal was a quick shot off a sweet pass from Huberdeau. Bob came up with some big saves, his stats to start this season are misleading as to how well he's played, and are due more to defensive lapses in front of him. Their D coverage has been improving with every game since Carolina whacked them. Even Yandle looked decent playing D last night. I was waiting for Crosby to pull some crazy poop out of his hat and turn the game around as he always seems to do against FL.
How long until Malkin returns? Hopefully next game both teams will have their players that missed last night back in the lineup.

Wait, a defensmean fumbled a puck at the blue line without being under heavy pressure?

This has never happened before. Burn him alive.

Yes, but they're not speedy Corsi dominating machines, so they both suck.

Marino is a rookie and will make rookie mistakes. Overall he's winning me over. He's playing top-line minutes and playing his off-side. He's still a work-in-progress, but IMO he's showing more positives than negatives. I always worry about this stuff though. Young players can ride some momentum then fizzle out, so I hope this isn't the case here.

I previously said the game speed can be too much for him at times and that will definitely show itself more when playing against top lines. While I still think he should go back to the AHL it appears the coaching staff has no plans on doing that permanently once everyone is healthy. Gudbranson's days are clearly numbered.

Meanwhile in HBSL land, I'm learning the lesson I expected to learn in picking too many players from one team. I'm down 166.5 to 178 and it's mainly due to my Vegas players going radio silent, not to mention Draisaitl. I'm lucky I'm only down about 12 points. If Vegas wakes up I should be able to win this week.

Sadly this egregious error wasn't analyzed via replay, so I couldn't get another look at it, but the ice was bad all night for everyone. Wonder if that contributed at all.

We all knew it would happen eventually. Can't be missing so many regulars and expect to keep winning games. Tonight could get ugly. Glad to see Hornqvist having a bounce back year. I'm ready to see some other options at RW for Sid/Guentz's line.

I think it's more that you don't have to find a reason to bash him when he does play well.

If both he and let's say Letang play well in a game, and you want to nitpick his game to find a fault, you should do the same for Letang. But that's not what RW does, he only delves deep to find fault with Johnson.

Yeah, but I agree with not doing that. I mean he nor anyone here does that for ALL players. The reason he won't nitpick Letang is because 90% of the time what Letang brings is positive and 95% of time what JJ brings is terrible play with a terrible contract, so it's always going to draw more criticism.

Geno, Sid and Letang commit lots of turnovers and sometimes from idiotic fancy moves they shouldn't try at certain times, but we don't call them out EVERY time because they bring far more good than bad.

We call out plenty of middlers but it's just not done as in dramatic fashion because they're still brining what they are expected to.

Right. But I'm just saying, if the top line was having a nice shift and Letang mishandles the puck at the line (not knowing if it was him or a puck slighlty rolling or a bump in the ice, etc.), would anyone have made a note to call it out specifically on Twitter?

Again, not saying he'd good overall. But when he has a decent game, why delve to purposefully find fault?

The issue with praising JJ for any good play is because any rational person knows his positive play is not sustainable. If it was he would have figured it out earlier in his 13 year career. Regression will happen and it will happen hard.

I'm glad he's played well for a few games and I would be ecstatic if it continued, but it won't, so I'm not going to praise him for finally playing replacement level hockey for three games.

You don't to have praise him for playing well, but you don't have to bury him when he played well either.

Yup. People call Letang out all the time. Hell a good portion of the fan base thinks the Pens would be better off trading him.
