The hope is that new GM, Bill Guerin, will foster an atmosphere of intensity that gets the players motivated to perform and not just to cash paychecks.

Isn't that Boudreau's job?

Either way, the idea of a guy like JT Brown actually making the final roster again only reinforces the notion that this team is once again going nowhere...

I will probably watch some wild games here and there this season, but I'll be damned if they get a single cent out of me. This organization is ass and seems to me the only consistent theme is Liepold.....so IMO he will continue to be the reason this organization continues to gasp for air until he sells the team or another GM comes in makes it clear they run the show (like a babcock or stevie Y).

Can't fork over 6 mil and 7.5 mil to 30+ year old players that could barely warrant the amounts in their 'primes'. Hate to pile on Spurgeon because I do love him as a player, but not that much love.

Gump, I don't think it's a problem if BG is creating an atmosphere that gets the players fired up, doesn't have to just be BB. But it is BB's job to keep them there if that is happening.

And now the annual "What I want the roster to be" for the opening of the season. Based only on what I have read and my supremely intelligent opinions.

Zucker/Staal/Fiala - Fiala gets his chance to prove his game. I hope Staal finds his legs again. If anything, Zucker/Fiala on paper should be good together. If Fiala can get used to playing the RW, this line should be very good. Not the most defensive-minded group, so they will NEED to dictate play on the ice.

Parise/Donato/Zuccarello - Parise crashing the net, while Zucc finds Donato for the shot. I'm afraid that this line is going to get beat up a lot. I'm still pretty unfamiliar with Zuccarello, but he appears to be a little guy. Parise will still outwork just about everyone, but his scoring touch is from 5ft and in, and that has really starting to take its toll over the last couple of year. With Donato playing C this year, I hope this keeps him engaged on the entire rink.

Greenway/Eriksson Ek/Kunin - I almost want Parise playing on this line, as it would be the hardest working, blue-collar, lunch-pail line in the NHL. But I guess we just pray for youth to be server and this line becoming a standout line. Kunin does have a great shot and Greenway can (at times) be a man among boys with the puck. I just hop JEE can finally find a way to score regularly. Let's just pretend for right now that is going to get 50+ assists this year.

Foligno/Koivu/Hartman - the big boy line? I can see the possibility of Koivu and Hartman getting a couple of goals each just off the hard work forechecking done by Foligno. Not going to score a lot, but should be a good defensive line to roll with. I don't know all that much about Hartman, but it sounds like between him and Foligno, they can agitate with the best of them, leaving Koivu to his strength...holding the back line defensively. I really do wish the best for Mikko this year, have always been a fan of his, but playing 4th line minutes and being saved for late game faceoffs might be the best use of Captain K for this year.

Bench: Stafford/Sturm - I DO NOT want Rask or Brown on this roster. If it's true that Rask was the only player to fail the skate test, it just goes to show that he cannot be worked with to improve. I hope CL is fine with him being buried in Iowa. Buyout coming after the season. Brown's only hope is that he is a right handed shot. Would prefer Sturm getting seasoning in IA, but he looked like he fit last year.

Suter/Dumba - a full and healthy season from both will be like giving happiness to all in the land! Suter is a year removed from the injury and Dumba keep climbing the ladder to elite D-man...works for me. Just no dumb fights from these 2, thet both are not that type of player.

Brodin/Spurgeon - I see this pairing as almost a mirror of Suter/Dumba...almost. Dumba is more offensive than Spurgeon, but Spurgeon is better defensively, even if he really is just 12 years old. He should try and grow a beard, give him a more adult look. Maybe looking so small and young is the secret for Spurgeon, as the rest of the NHL sees this small child in the corner, so they go in softer than normal. Brodin is just going to be consistent, 3-8 goals, 10-15 assists and steady D.

Seeler/Pateryn/Hunt - I like these 3 as the 3rd pairing, as Hunt will give BB options if one or the other is struggling and will also be the "secret weapon" on the PP when he plays. Seeler is the big green meanie that is needed to clear out in front of the net. Pateryn seemed a little out of sorts for most of last year, so hopefully we get the guy that played well in Dallas this year.

Dubnyk/Stalock - not really a lot to say here, except I hope Stalock makes it possible for BB to play a little more this year to save wear and tear on Dubs. And that every time Stalock plays, we should be checking on Gump, who's pretty much has a coronary every time. The sad thing here is I want Dubnyk to play at an all-star level, but not good enough that BG thinks he needs to give him another contract.

Guys not making it - Rask, I have said enough bad things about him over the past year, so I will leave it at that. Brown, as much as I want another Bulldog on the roster (GO UMD!!!), he just didn't show anything that year that warranted time in the NHL. The only other player that could be making the roster is Gerald Mayhew, who has done nothing but improve since joining IA. Maybe he takes the place over Sturm or Stafford, as he deserves it. Guys like Soucy, Sokolov, Lodnia, Khovanov, Bitten, Shaw, Mennell and Belpedio sharpen their game in IA.

I agree with you Gus, I just hope Donato can handle center ice responsibilities and hope Parise and Zuccarello can stay healthy. If those three things happen this line is a legit second line.
Staal/Zucker/Fiala Lots of ifs but Staal must play like he did two years ago, ditto Zucker and Fiala has to have a breakout season and stay healthy.
I like the D, especially getting Dumba back full time.
Dubnyk has to be a little more consistent than he was last year.
If all this happens it is a borderline playoff team imo.

I was hoping me might see a change with the first pre-season game last night, but really nothing that got me excited. The Wild outshot Dallas and still only scored 1 goal. Was not overly impressed with Donato at C. The Zucker/Staal/Fiala...I mean Stafford...line didn't look all that bad. And Hartman and Foligno flying around with each other looks to have some promise. Nice to see Dumba on the ice again.

BMG, not sure if you got to see last night came or not...but if so, did you cringe every time Spurgeon or Zuccarello went into the corner, thinking "well, there's the end of $13 mil"? Just playin' with ya man. Spurgeon did look quite rusty in a few spots last night. I hope that big payday doesn't make him try to more than he is capable of, leading to big mistakes.

Thanks Joe G for agreeing with me. I know best!

And lastly...WASN'T STALOCK AWESOME GUMP!?!

Ok, not lastly...I sure hope that Leipold has no problem with burying Rask's salary in Iowa at least for this year. If he is still as slow as he was last year and hasn't an ounce of improvement, he NEEDS to be in Iowa. It will have nothing to do getting some cap space, as they will only get just a hair over 25% of it. But if Leipold is serious about wanting to win a Cup, then he needs to let GB & BB only keep the best players that they have and not worry about who has what type of salary. I would think it could be considered his penance for hiring Fenton, if he is taking all the blame for that.

I stayed up to watch the replay on FSN but of course the Twins go 2 hours into extra innings... and to top it off, the jaded Minnesota fan that I am shut that off when the Sox took a 2 run lead in the 12th... only to miss the conclusion with the Twins winning... LOL I did listen to the first period.. sounded to me like a lot of the same ol... stupid penalties, missed opportunities....

Didn't see the game and won't watch to regular season, but that's not what worries me.....it's that we pay that much to those two players.

Gump, I did the same thing, except in the 11th.

BMG, I think you are starting to see the bigger paydays come up now in the NHL. Yeah, I was thinking that $7.5 a year for Spurgeon was a tad (ok, way) overpaying for him, considering they have Dumba at $6 mil. I just noticed something, that makes it $21 yr for the top 3 defensemen on the Wild. I think that is going to support the way I am starting to look at this...it's the simple solution to keeping your best players (to me, and I think you will agree, Spurgeon is 1 of the 5 top players on the Wild roster as it sits right now) locked up with the team. The Wild have never really been an attractive destination for FAs (the same in all major sports, Minnesota is looked down upon), so they will generally HAVE to overpay to get players, a la Zuccarello, until they can start developing their owns studs. This idea was thrown out the window by Chuck Fletcher, but thinking he will have another team develop players, then he will just trade draft picks to get those developed players. And we see how that worked out. Now the Wild have had bare cupboards for years, and just when they would start to get some decent talent like an Alex Tuch, CF didn't hesitate to toss him in to protect the players he thought were elite. So that goes to question his ability to judge talent. Another long story. Although Fenton's 2 drafts were somewhat questioned, as least he HAD the draft picks to take the proverbial shot in the dark. I think the problem there was the ego of Fenton from hearing how great he was at finding a diamond in the rough lead to the drafting of Filip Johansson. Time will tell on that pick. But the whole point of this lengthy diatribe is that salaries averages are rising and the sticker shock might be great at the signing, but 4 years down the road it just might look brilliant! It's just like the draft, except it has a TON of impact on the team. But now the Wild is starting to build that base again with players like Lodnia, McBain, Khovanov, Boldy and Dewar. Along with the soon to be "greatest Wild player EVER" in Kirill Kaprizov. Not that I am putting any kind of pressure on him.

I have read rumblings that the NHL is looking into increasing how much the salary cap increases on an annual basis. The NHL is finally starting to get the exposure of the other 3 major sports. It's not there yet, but it is getting better. With that comes more higher profile ads, which means more revenue for the league and players. But along with that comes higher ticket prices and all the things most of us fans hate about major sports.

So, now that I have made yet another long story longer...I beg the question of everyone...How the hell do you guys just write a sentence or 2, as I seem to be incapable of doing so?
