It's surely the case for most players before they go pro. But human beings can react in many different ways in front of crazy amounts of money - Pat1993
And as a human what's to say any of us would do any different when faced with the opportunity to provide generational wealth to our entire family? |

Agents often protect the players from their own ignorance. You hire the agent to have poopty conversations you don't want to have and likely aren't qualified to have. A couple years ago in the NFL Richard Sherman signed with the 49ers and acted as his own agent...the NFLPA stepped in because a lot of the stuff in there was so team friendly and he just wasn't aware of some of the conditons and stipulations and how it qould impact him especially coming off a major Achilles injury. The 49ers acted in good faith and adjusted the already signed deal but it shows the danger and risk.
All this to say agents are a necessary evil - Takemedrunkimhome
oh i agree with all that, don't get me wrong. but they drive up these contracts more than anyone. well them and the players association. |

Which is the job of an agent and the PA. They work to get the best pay and working conditions possible...otherwise we hear the horror stories of the 65 year old ex NHLer living in Manitoba in a shack who doesn't have the money to buy socks |

That's a very good point. Personally I'd try to stay true to my values, but to say it wouldn't change me at all would be lying I think |

I'd stay true to my values too. I love hockey. I love the Habs. I love my family much, much more and would work to get every damned cent I can in the short career players have because the second that player isn't at the top the team will move on and say it's just business. You want loyalty...get a dog |

i get it, i'm just saying it always gets out of control until a lockout and then it starts out less out of control until it's out of control again.
i'm all for paying the players lots and lots of money but sometimes i cringe when i see a basketball player who already has 10s of millions more than they could ever spend in the bank holding out for more on their next contract because a similar player makes a certain amount and they and their agent want to make more than them.
i feel like if we had put caps on things a long time ago we'd be okay. like if someone had told baseball players "a max contract is 3 million per year to play this game for a living" they'd be happy playing the game for 3 million if they were great and 2 million if they were good and $850,000 if they sat the bench. but we let things get so out of control that average players make like 5 million dollars a year. and basketball is ridiculous. you can totally suck and make double digit millions in the nba. |

That's a new (well, not that new lol) reality a lot of people have a hard time accepting. Just take Markov for instance, many wanted to give him a contract just so he could get his 1000th game as a hab, and so we could honour his contribution to the team. |

Well, you still have to be part of the elite, no? Is the % of players who make it to the NBA a lot higher than for hockey players to the NHL? I don't know poop about basketball... |

i don't really know. i just know when i hear some of the numbers i hear them throw around on the radio for white guys playing basketball it's crazy. i feel like the nba is by far the furthest out of whack. but all the sports are kind of out of control. |

And Markov could have had that two years ago but wanted more money...it's the reality but he made his choice and made clear what was important. Radulov did too |

As Gary Payton said...after $20 mil none of it matters.
There's a lot of truth there. But I still can't blame anybody for wanting anything they can get or what they feel they're worth |

i don't blame them. i'd take it too if someone was offering it to me. i just feel like things shouldn't be structured to where they're being offered that much money.
we just let it spiral out of control way too fast.
i recently heard charles barkley tell a story about magic johnson being offered the first million dollar contract and all the players being blown away. that was in 1981. that inflation seems nuts to me when 40 years later they're offering star players 35 million per year. |
