#1Center > #1winger

#1 winger > #2 center

1C(Eichel) > 2C(Matthews)

Matthews is undoubtedly one of the best 2Cs in the league, but Marner is an elite 1st line winger

So Malkin has only ever been a #2 C? Gotcha.
- RogerRoeper

Don't get me wrong, Matthews takes advantage of his sheltered position, just like Malkin benefits from Crosby, but the leafs recognized that he's largely a 1 dimensional player and needed to do better. Hence the JT signing.

Once JT's speed dies off in the next few years though, that contract is going to be rough. Not sure Matthews will be able to make up for that

Marner is absolutely a stud though. I can understand a debate between him and Eichel.

makes sense. matthews is the 34th best C in the league, just like his jersey number.

1-31. 31 #1 C's
32. Malkin
33. Samsung Rinehurt
34. mattews

That has nothing to do with the JT signing lmao, and to even consider Matthews as a one-dimensional player is laughable.

That is actually debatable.

Marner had more points
Marner's +/- was way better than Matthews(+22 to -9)
Marner Kills Penalties

Matthews scores more goals- HOWEVER 37 goals and 73 points and still being a -9 does not look good on Matthews.

Marner had 1 more Power play point than Matthews - not a huge deal
Matthews had 18 more shots

Marner is way more important than people think he is.

Lol are you quoting plus/minus the luck stat that nobody gives a crap about anymore. You lost all credibility

+/- is a fine stat to use, it just cant be your only basis because poop happens however a 31 goal difference is not just poop happens. It means Matthews was on the ice for a total of 81 Goals against.

+/- was valuable when no advanced stats existed.

JT signing had nothing to do with that. LOL. He saw a chance to sign a star C in his prime and did it.

And I wasn't aware less PP time than you should have means you are "Sheltered".

There's no shame in being one of the premier 2Cs in the game. He's great at what he does

Wings fans always hated how he did not play the stars enough and stuck plugs on the top 2 lines.

Interestingly enough, the 1 cup he has was the year he played Zetterberg/Datsyuk 21+ minutes per.

Auston Matthews needs to play much more. End of story. I really can't look at his usage and judge him. His stats are just fantastic given his usage. What's harder than scoring 5 on 5 goals?

- RogerRoeper

playing 82 games? Maybe Babcock is jaded by Zetterburgs back issues and believes that he would have won 2 cups if he'd laid back a bit

I wonder how that might affect his usage

Well for one, Babcock doesn't use him when he's not playing...stupid Babcock.

I am still stunned by that 3rd period.

It's funny how every summer Dubas trades Babcock's favouite players that he overuses.

WE have still yet to see the Leafs best lineup once under Babcock.

- RogerRoeper

i agree. I think this will be probably our best lineup to win a cup and sadly our best chance will be wasted because Babcock is still the coach IMO.

It is, just not the way you were using it. Guess what...Marner was on the ice for more goals against than Matthews. Look it up. Oh and Matthews was on the ice for 74 not 81.

Leaf fans do you think Marner has a case to want the same contract as Matthews?
- sabreadvocate1

Not in the least. Matthews isn't, and never will be, a comparable for Marner.

The sooner Marner's dumbass agent and father get that into the heads, the better.
