New topic... Guess the 7 Hawks forwards to be protected in the expansion draft in 2 years. Remember they have to be signed for the 21-22 season.
Givens -
Toews
Kane
Cat assuming he's extended
Strome ditto
Maybes -
Shaw
Nylander assuming he's extended
Kubalik ditto
Saarela ditto
Others -
Hagel assuming he's extended
Carpenter
Johnson
Ineligible due to the 2 year rule -
Dach
Entwistle
Kurashev
Haakareinen
Soderlund
Note I did not list Saad. I think he won't be extended and will be traded to gain cap space prior to his NTC kicking in July 1 2020. |

Kubalik will be in the top 6 and score at least 25 goals this season!
?? = D A C H - SoftServe
Kubalik only pit as extra forward because don't what he is going to be a wild card. Dach so lets rush a 18-19 year old and thrust him in a situation that maybe he not ready for. Let him have one more year in juniors then move into that 2nd or 3rd line position next year. |

Hope the Rangers have good security and food tasters:
Lucian Kim

NHL star @9Artemi: Putin's time is up, he can no longer distinguish between right and wrong; I don't like the lawlessness.
Kidding aside, wonder if he is going to bring his grandparents here to live with him? |

Ron Francis announced as GM of new Seattle franchise.
So, which of our eligible players is he likely to covet? - pdx2ord
Chicago's 1st round pick and Brent Seabrook. Brent is from Victoria which is not too far from Seattle |

I have thought that both he and Keith would waive for that team, and that team alone, given proximity to home and (in Keith's case) children. |

There's a lot of guys you can't really label as X line player. Is Cagguila a 1st line player or a Top 6 winger? No, but he played a lot on the top line with Toews and Kane last year and when they played together that line was very effective for the team. If a guy can find a spot on a line where they build chemistry it doesn't matter if he fits the label of an X line player or not. Smith had his best year playing a Top 6 role with Stone and Pageau. Not saying he's going to replicate that by any means, but what I'm saying is that if you find the right mix of guys together on a line regardless of salary, or where people think they can slot at in the lineup, or what we think their production can be and they play effective against the other team good things will happen for the player and the team - Savetheembers33
I agree and it can be really subjective when assigning a label to a player for sure. I think it comes down to everyone having different definitions. There is no official formula, but I'm going to break down what I think.
Smith has been playing more than typical 4th line minutes for his team. Even Strength in ()
2018-19 - 16:21 - 6th (14:26 - 5th)
2017-18 - 16:43 - 7th (13:46 - 7th)
2016-17 - 16:23 - 6th (13:02 - 9th)
2015-16 - 15:24 - 8th (12:29 - 8th)
I get that Ottawa isn't a deep team and he moved up the pecking order a bit as a result, but it remains to be seen where he will fit in the Hawks scheme. IMO 4th line guys will typically be more in that 8-11 minutes ice time. I think for the Hawks, the ideal situation will be having a 4th line that can play minutes, so the forward lines can have a bit more balance. I think some of it will depend on how successful the team is. If they play with the lead, the offensive guns can rest more and the defensive guys can get a few extra shifts.
I think the Hawks top forwards having career years was fun to watch but also a product of the team chasing the score so much. The coach had to play Kane/Toews more than what is probably ideal.
Going back to Smith, he put up 0.40 to 0.44 Points per Game seasons 3 of the last 4 years. (for comparison AA was at 0.47 and 0.43 the last two seasons)
IMO if he plays somewhere around 13-16 minutes a night and puts up around that 0.40 points per game, he is a pretty much average 3rd line player. |

Meh, I could see one or both of them waiving their NMC with the stipulation that the Hawks don't include a sweetener to entice Seattle to select them. Hawks can then protect other D-men. Seattle won't select a 36 or 37 year old D man with declining skills.

I don’t post often but got the urge with all of these line combinations. The Hawks scoring has always been more balanced when you’ve split Kane and Toews IMO.
Therefore can we mull on this one for a minute...
Saad - Toews - Shaw
Debrincat - Strome - Kubalik
Nylander - Dach - Kane
Caggiula - Kampf - Carpenter - DC134
If all the ??'s actually show up the way they supposedly are able to this could be a crazy scoring team. Seeing this pretty fresh look at the lineup, it could be bowman's hope(plan but I hope he isn't planning based on this). Could you imagine strome and debrincat bumslaying vs on the 3rd line. I like this a lot. There is also a lot of wishful thinking in these lines though. |

Anisimov also has scored 20g in 3 of his last 4 seasons (4x in his career)
AA also averaged .467ppg in his career (vs just a 2yr snap shot versus 4 of Smith who is .315ppg in his career, topping 20g once)
Smith's 196 PIMs the last 3 years are nearly as much as AA has had in his entire career. Not sure how that is expected to help a PK that sucks....I'm looking forward to that.
I'm sure it will be Seabrooks fault on the PK after Smith's idiotic minor penalties hes fond of
I'm not sure why Smith can be even close to expected to score at a .40ppg pace at this stage of his career on a team not OTT where he should get no more than 9-10min a game. I simply hope his dipsh*t penalties dont hurt them and JC has the balls to sit him early |

How many 20 goal seasons did AA have without Kane/Panarin for a huge portion of the season on his wing (including a lot of PP time)...
Who you play with matters, especially when they are top 10 offensive talent in the NHL. From 15/16 to 17/18 the guy lined up with Kane for 2600 minutes of icetime and ~2000 minutes with Panarin while being deployed offensively a lot. Panarin was gone for one of those seasons and he had some minutes with Schmaltz, but AA did not score much when playing with anyone else.
Smith might get less minutes and might score less than the 0.40 PPG he has had in 3 of the last 4 years, but he could put up 3rd line numbers like he has been doing.
As for the penalties...that is also yet to be determined. We've seen a lot of players change teams and have swings in their PIMs and number of minors they take. That is up to the coaching staff, the leadership of the players and how they approach the game. Some guys are more prone to bad penalties sure, but I think it is silly to just write a guy off before he has even taken a shift. I'm optimistic to have someone with some actual grit in their game. |
