Hall would be rather ornery, depending on what team he was moved to.

He stuck it out with Edmonton and then they trade him and make the playoffs next year, and then he sticks it out with NJ and then they move him and become contenders.

I like Hall, but extension happens by December or start looking. After Parise put us through five years of hell with his departure, that can't happen again.

I think this is spot on. Paying top dollar for the ages 29-37 seasons is something that would be out of character for Shero if it were a UFA. Just because he is already on the team, it is ok to extend him at those same terms?

Late 20's winger with some injury history? Pass. Devils should move him now. He'll never be worth his contract.

Hall in his 30s for Panarin $$$$

VS

Young assets in the age range of Hischier/Hughes

which one gets NJ a cup?

Totally agree. Issue here is he missed most of last year, so what's his value? Have to think other teams are going to want to see him play a bit before they dish our prospect/picks/assets, but how long would that take? And what if he starts off cold? When is it too long to wait? It's complicated.

If we are in an year 4 of 8 year rebuilding cycle, is this even a question as to whether or nor you trade Hall.

Plus dedicating 12-15% of your cap space for an injury prone player is just not smart, risk management wise.

But you should never let a star get to the summer one-year before free agency. They start hearing inflated dollars for bad signings, NBA free agent signings, and think that $8.5 million is not a lot of money. If you wanted to keep him, should have signed him February (hurt or not). If not, move him now.

Poor Taylor Hall. Never had any love in Edmonton either.

Again, Johnny Gaudreau is just 2 years younger than Hall. Hall's had 2 significant injuries more than Gaudreau.. not based off memory but just games missed. So.. we'd be getting 2 years younger, 2 injuries less, and -55lbs of strength on the left wing.
I want to like that swap more than I do. Of course, Hall won't be worth his ridiculous salary probably less than half way through it.

So how do you figure you will get loads of prospects/picks when you just admitted what I've been saying for two years now. Always injured and breaking down before 30 and soon to be ufa, can't back check to save his life. You have a depreciating asset that has been losing value since his mvp season, a season where he did nothing in the playoffs that year.

I mean he had 6pts in 5 games against one of the leagues best teams. What more did you expect from him after carrying this team to the post season?

Agreed , The days of of over paying for 1 year of a star are long gone.
look @ what Trouba and Barrie brought back with 1 year left before free agency. Don't expect a ton back for Hall, a #1 and after that it's anyone's guess. Maybe an A prospect , a Mid 6 winger or 2nd pr D if lucky. Don't get your hopes up for too much more.

I hear what you're saying, but there have been examples where the return has been substantial, or at least included a top prospect. I mean Phoenix got a haul for Martin Hanzal! And more recently, OTT did get a highly touted d-man in return for Stone who was also on an expiring deal. I'm not saying it's the exact same situation as either, and there are others that disprove my argument, but I think it is still possible to net some good assets. You just need a competent, and not desperate, GM.

I've been saying it for a while. I would hate for the devils to resign hall. Hes always hurt with a huge contract and will be declining in a few years. No thanks! Trade him right now!!!!!

Let's say Hall wants 7-8 years between $11-12 mil per year. What contending or up and coming team can offer that besides the Devils? Maybe the Islanders, Blue Jackets, Canadians, and Red Wings. Do any of those teams have more upside than the Devils? No. Hall's choices are limited if he's looking for money, term, and a chance at a Cup.

Hopefully, the Devils can be true Cup contenders by Hall's 2nd year of his contract and the end of Hughes' entry-level contract.

If by January the Devils are out of the playoff race and Hall is not signed, trade him and do a proper rebuild. Trade Subban also because there's no point in keeping him.

The Devils should not trade Zacha, Bratt, Wood or Boqvist at this point. Have them as insurance on the left side until Hall is signed. If Hall is signed, then trade away. Only trade Bratt or Boqvist if it brings the Devils a top 2 left-handed defenseman.

One thing that happened more than once with Lou that set NJ back and something Ray can’t let happen is to let another top talent walk for nothing.

If Hall can’t commit to NJ, then Ray needs to commit to NJ (maybe Lou committed to the player too often and took them and their agent at their word) by improving this team and trade him for assets.

I get that hall probably (ok highly likely) won't be worth his contract in a few years and it is annoying that he gets hurt a bit (not blaming him) but I still want nj to sign him? Why? Because the devils should take advantage of the elcs their best prospects have..the boqvist Hughes ty are all on elcs so and they have pk so they should be trying to go for it now before guys like Hughes are making 9 to 10 mill

All the reasons people are citing for not wanting Hall long-term are also the reasons the contract guesses they throw out for feel too high. I don't know how much of a sure thing it is that he is going to be making 11+ a year, and keeping him around at 10m AAV is a no-brainer to me. Particularly if the trade market is anything like what its been this year (where teams have been basically giving away name brand players for free).

The idea of what you could have is always more tantalizing than what you do have. What they have is a stud who enjoys being in NJ and wants to win now. They should be doing what they can to keep him and bring in guys that can make that happen, not continuously kicking the can down the road on the promise of picks and cap space.

yeah if Hall moves out this year, it probably won't be a hockey trade, though it would be nice if we could get a Brannstrom type player out of the deal. Maybe Shero can use it to haul Dobson from the Islanders.

Looking at a lot of deadline deals it typically happens that guys bring in returns above expectations and some below expectation. We've seen that happen both ways here.

That's why bringing in Panarin to NJ (if possible) would have been a brilliant insurance policy. You sign an elite player and if Hall decides to move along your team still has an elite talent. If not you have cap concerns up but two superstars for the next few years. Instead we got Wayne Simmonds short term!

The real concern is Hall doesn't sign and gets hurt.
Then we are (frank)ing (frank)ed.

The whole Hall thing has gotten old, fast.

I'm more interested in what's happening at development camp.
