It's a great deal for Colorado. They traded another team's player and got the 2nd line centre they needed!

Man I hate Toronto but they won this deal without question...

It kinda pisses me off the Leafs got that return on that package....

Still tho, if I'm Marner I'm telling Dubas and Shanahan to go piss off.... None of these moves would have had to happen if they didn't sign Tavares.....

I honestly hope Lou offer-sheets Marner and he signs with the Islanders...

That would make me happy....

Toronto tried some late 90's Detroit or NYR nonsense signing Tavares and it failed miserably and rightly so..... Sorry but you can't just sign a top free agent and then expect your star RFA's to "take one for the team"..... And the craziest part is that when or if Marner leaves they will blame him for being greedy and not taking a discount...... Why should he?..... The Leafs would be fine right now and would have all their players they traded away if they didn't sign Tavares.... Now the Leafs will have a few star players and little depth.... Tho this trade does work in Toronto's favor, IMO it's still not enough... With the signing of Tavares, the Leafs went from a bright future to no future all in one pen stroke....

And I'm a Hawks fan, Toronto doesn't affect the Hawks at all, but what they did last summer really blew my mind - because they damn well knew they had to get Nylander, Marner and Matthews signed but blew that cap space on Tavares - that was totally irresponsible.... That's like spending your electric bill on beer and then when the bill comes you go pawn a bunch of crap to keep the lights on... Just irresponsible... It's worse than that tho because Dubas literally thinks Marner should take "one for the team" while Tavares makes his money.... Why the heck should Marner do that???

If I'm Marner I'm out of town, especially after getting bounced in the first round - there would be ZERO way I'm signing - I will sign a 12M AAV 5-year contract before I would look at any thing Toronto has to offer .... Because what they did was wrong....

So yea, Toronto can clear as much cap space they want but I don't think Marner will sign... The team got bounced in the first round and the team is arguably worse now than it was 2 weeks ago....

I think alot of people are overlooking Kerfoot here. He is a great player, only 24 and has surpassed the 40 point mark in both of his first seasons in the league. Primarly playing with Colin Wilson, Tyson Jost and JT Compher. Put him on a second line with Tavares and Johnsson/Kapanen/Marner/Nylander and he could get north of 60 pts.

Fantasy sleeper next year!

When Marner signs with the Leafs and you go back and look at this post you are going to feel really, really, stupid.

How dare the Leafs go out and sign the biggest free agent of 2018?

Tavares failed miserably?? 88pts (16th) 47 goals (3rd) Worse than 2 weeks ago? Why ? Because they lost Kadri for Kerfoot ? Rosen for Barrie ? Zaitsev for Ceci? Signed Spezza for league minimum to help the 2nd PP unit? Who is this guy??

Thing is they may keep Barrie. They have Barrie, Muzzin, and Ceci and odds are should be able to still make moves. All depends on what these guys want in the end to stay, if they do.

Thing is Kadri is good but only when engaged and he is beyond inconsistent there. Add in his stupidity and issues with the refs yeah glad to be rid of that

Look, this is pretty simple stuff.

This is a Leaf team that is rich in talent, weak in character.

When the stakes are high they fail, choke, lose, become unglued, whatever.

They lack a compelling leader that can carry them to the next level.

There is nothing in these recent moves that offers any great hope. This is the team that has become creative in its capacity for choking. It is fully understood that competitive success is often a matter of will, a drive compelled by the heart.

Last year the Leafs did not show much character and often, when it mattered they showed even less heart. Kadri was the one guy you could count on to play with passion, who cared about winning, who put the team ahead of personal achievement. I believe the Leafs will regret this deal more than any deal they have done for awhile.

Signing JT will have cap implications for years. Getting a rental is temporary help with only 1 D signed for next year. Losing Kadri the only player with any passion will be missed. Besides signing Marner there is also Kerfoot to get done. The son of the Whitecaps owner won’t sign a discounted contract.

So long as Kerfoot doesn't cross check anyone in the head in the playoffs and Barrie doesn't set up Boston with team crushing goals then I'd say it's a win
- mgriffen

Barrie will do exactly that, unfortunately. He'll also crush it in the offensive zone though.

Except that Kerfoot will probably sign 2 yrs for $2.5M and Kadri is already at $4.5M.

This is basically a 45 pt forward for a 110 points between Kerfoot and Barrie. The Avs will be paying about $6.25M for less than half of the production they gave up where the Leafs will have about $5.25M in salary with two NHL caliber players vs our one.

- Dyaciuk

He scored 30 goals a couple times while being used as the shutdown C. You're looking at his points from last year after he was bumped back due to JT.

Give it some time, I think maybe the Av's won this deal.

Longterm the Av’s did great getting need for a team stocked full of talent. As for the Leafs getting a rental Dubas did ok. Overall the Leafs didn’t gain any ground & many teams have improved.

Not much of an upgrade.

Zaitsev >>>> Ceci

Barrie and Gardiner are pretty close. Maybe slight edge to Barrie.

If you actually play Harpur, I’d honestly say your D is worse.

I am sorry to keep bringing up the elephant in the room.

This team has no heart. They are chokers in the games that really matter.

Kadri can be frustrating but he plays with heart and is a total team guy.

How do you improve a team when you take character out of the dressing room.

If anything I thought Dubas would be looking to add some character this off season.
