Bergevin pretty much screwed the Habs over. Carolina will match, he needed to pay 2 million more and give up another 1st. Carolina will wait the full 7 days, and that will handcuff MTL from being able to do anything else. And guess what sports fans, all good UFA’s will be signed and gone in 7 days. I like that he did the offer sheet, but he royally F’d up by coming in too cheap! Habs won’t get anyone now. Our only hope is that Carolina is stupid..... but I doubt that. 😔

I agree, he didn't offer enough. He purposely went below 8.5 so he didn't need to offer the 2nd first rounder. I'm not sure if he needed to go up 2 million. Even if he went up to just 9 million. The 2nd first may have at least made the Canes think about it.

Hey Dodge, Marc B really just stepped up to set the market for all the RFAs with this setup. I don't see the black balling or listing he might get from this. In absolute straight down the middle I don't care about what the other teams think attitude you would think every GM should have in a competitive league with this so called tool in their toolbox, this offer is not high enough, so something is up between all the teams. It is all show it seems, but as I am watching my boy Marner is now in a safer place to work out a deal with the Leafs with all this.

Maybe he will get a favourable trade with the Canes in another deal in the summer.

Canes will wait 6 days 23 hours & 59 minutes to match. Because until they do, Habs technically have Aho's contract on their books towards the offseason cap of ~90m, and are unable to use that space elsewhere, or trade the picks needed for compensation.

Just because someone is worth 1.1 billion, doesn't mean he 1.1 billion to spend. A lot of the time the money is tied up in stocks and other assets. Assets that they aren't probably willing to give up to pay an NHL players salary. Unfortunately for them, players salaries need to be paid in actual cash. Eugene Melnyk is worth a lot of money, but he definitely has a cash flow problem from all reports.

Handing out 20 million to one player over a 12 month span is still a lot of money, even for a guy worth 1.1 billion.
